Tell us three things about yourself . . .
I was so anxious at a point in stage school that when auditioning to join the choir I buckled in fear and started to tremble and cry. I wanted to be part of it so bad!! Nevertheless, I didn't get accepted.
I love the mantra - Everything I lose creates space for everything I need! So, I paved a path for my own unique voice to be heard in my own unique way.
I'm so glad I didn't peak in high/secondary school AND I think leftover cold pizza is da bomb!!
How would you describe your music?
It’s for sure confessional pop! A bit like a musical journal entry that’s honest, messy, cathartic and that with enough playback offers some form of wisdom in hindsight. That said, my music has been off the wall and hit so many different genres. When you work/demo for film/tv you get a lot of interesting requests!!!
Who are your musical inspirations?
As a child, I would dance or sit beside my family's record player almost every day listening to Paul William's soundtrack for Bugsy Malone. As an adult, I belt the lyrics as loud as I can in my car ha! I was totally enamoured by musical theatre and Disney as a child and for sure this inspired and influenced my writing sensibilities. Also, I vividly remember seeing Sinéad O'Connor's performance of Prince's Nothing Compares 2 U and being physically moved, and then the song Stay by Shakespeare’s Sister dramatically affected me. Though it kinda spooked me, I do remember using the kitchen table as a stage/platform one afternoon to sort of karaoke to it while it played on the radio!!!
It's hard to define one, or even just a few inspirations because everything from Supertramp, Billy Joel, The Cranberries to Baby Jake, RuthAnne, every girly pop star, rock band and dance music through the 90s and noughties have inspired me!! Humans, connection, nature, life experience, pain, love, heart break, they are all musical inspirations to me!!!
What was the first gig you ever went to?
All Saints at The Point with Momma Jean and Daddy Shane! Santa got us the tickets!!!
What was the first record you ever bought?
I ever bought!!!? Like saved my pocket/Sunday money to buy? I think it was probably something like Don’t Say You Love Me by M2M or What Would You Do by City High! I remember my first ever tape that my Dad bought me though! That was Mysterious Girl by Peter Andre! No joke! We were in Cork or something and my Dad made the record store guy play the entire song over the speaker before buying it for me! #mortified haha.
What’s your favourite song right now?
I am obsessed with Sally, When the Wine Runs Out by Role Model, and Chapstick by Coin gets me so amped for like anything I need to do!! If you haven't listened, seriously blast it and you will get your s*** done!!! Confusingly there's another artist Model Child in LA that is amazing and I recommend his Discog to everyone!!!
Favourite lyric of all time?
Lyric!!? Like one? Ha!! That’s impossible!! Forced to choose I’d say every single line of Vienna by Billy Joel. Also. "Cause all of my kindness is taken for weakness" from Four Five Seconds by Rihanna hits pretty deep!
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
I’d choose a very chill sound bath, like something that channels balancing vibrations so I wouldn’t lose my mind.
Where can people find your music/more information?
Most of me goes on my Instagram these days @romalonecreative or my website.
