Dutch singer-songwriter Goldkimono (Martijn 'Tienus' Konijnenburg) has released his new single, This One's On The House, the title track from his third album, which is out this June. We asked him the BIG questions .. .
The song and album was co-produced by Tim Bran, known for his work with London Grammar and Birdy.
Speaking about his new song, Goldkimono says, "Writing This One's On The House felt like a moment of alignment - realising how other people’s expectations project onto you and deciding where to draw the line. There’s a balance between generosity and integrity. I’m all for giving, but staying true to myself comes first."
Tell us three things about yourself…
I wrote my album, This One’s On The House, largely at my kitchen table, through a beat-up laptop and some corded Apple earbuds. I’ve written music for other pop artists. I love a good cheese platter - oh, and I’ve never seen Star Wars. Guess that’s two in one now.
How would you describe your music?
I wouldn’t, I’d just play it. LOL. But since you’re asking . . . probably warm, offbeat, human? It lives somewhere between art-pop and singer-songwriter, with grooves that twist and melodies that feel familiar but slightly sideways.
Who are your musical inspirations?
Paul Simon, Talk Talk, Peter Gabriel, 10cc, Japan, and Talking Heads. I love artists who mix head and heart - thoughtful lyrics, unexpected arrangements and a touch of wit.
What was the first gig you ever went to?
A show by Pennywise, a punk rock band from the US. It was loud, messy, and amazing.
What was the first record you ever bought?
Cypress Hill - Unreleased and Revamped. Still love it when I hear it today. Total time capsule.
What’s your favourite song right now?
Moon Rocks - Talking Heads.
Favourite lyric of all time?
"Tell her something in my heart needs her more than even clowns need the laughter of the crowd." - Tell Her by Del Amitri.
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Waiting in Vain - Bob Marley & The Wailers.
Where can people find your music/more information?
Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube . . . wherever you can listen. And on my socials, where I sometimes cook eggs while my songs play in the background, Instagram and my website.
