7 foolishly good releases to look out for in April

Spring has sprung, April Foolers have had their laughs, and Easter is on the horizon. But what else does this month have in store to entertain us?

Well, on the telly front viewers are in for an egg-cellent treat with the return of both Netflix's You and a new series of Black Mirror.

Over on the big screen, it's game on for Minecraft fans with the release of the long-awaited movie based on the popular hit video game. Plus, cult Irish hero Fran the Man is back!

Music to our ears? Hopefully so! American Indie folk band Bon Iver are gearing up to hit the right notes with their new EP.

Movies

1. A Minecraft Movie - Friday, 4 April

The Minecraft movie has been in the works for a long time. It was first announced in 2014, with several changes in direction, writers, and directors over the years.

Now it's finally set for release with Jared Hess at the helm. Hess, who is best known for offbeat humour and eccentric characters in films like Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre, is tipped to bring a fresh and quirky twist to the 2011 Swedish video game, which is one of the best-selling video games of all time. As of 2025, it has sold over 250 million copies across various platforms.

Boasting a stellar cast including Jason Momoa, Jennifer Coolidge, Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers and Sebastian Hansen, the live-action adaptation looks set to capture the sense of exploration, crafting and survival that makes Minecraft so popular.

Fingers crossed that all the delays were worth it. Game on!

2. Four Mothers - Friday, 4 April

The new film from A Date for Mad Mary director Darren Thornton received its world premiere at the BFI London Film Festival in October where it won the festival's Audience Award for Best Feature.

Written by brothers Colin Thornton and Darren Thornton, Four Mothers "tells the story of Edward (James McArdle), a novelist saddled with caring for his elderly mother (Fionnula Flanagan) who finally finds himself on the brink of literary success".

The cast also includes Dearbhla Molloy, Stella McCusker, Niamh Cusack, Paddy Glynn, Rory O'Neill, Gordon Hickey and Gearóid Farrelly.

Four Mothers is a Port Pictures and Portobello Films and Television production and is financed by Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland, the UK's Common Humanity Arts Trust, Coimisiún na Meán, and RTÉ.

3. Fran the Man, Friday, 11 April

Fran the Man, the feature-length spin-off of the cult football mockumentary series Fran, will land in cinemas later this month.

The series originally ran on Setanta Sports and TV3 between 2009 and 2011.

The film, written by Richie Conroy (Crá, Malory Towers) and directed by Stephen Bradley (Last One Laughing, Noble), received its world premiere at the Dublin International Film Festival last month.

The cast of Fran also includes Ardal O'Hanlon, Amy Huberman, Risteárd Cooper, Toni O'Rourke, and Deirdre O'Kane.

"It's such a privilege that my debut original feature will soon be available to an Irish cinema audience," said writer Conroy.

"Fran the Man is a rare thing - a four-quadrant movie - that is the perfect tonic for anyone who is looking for a laugh, an engaging scéal, and a bit of feel-good escapism."

Television

4. Black Mirror Season 7, Netflix, 10 April

Season seven of the acclaimed Black Mirror is due to drop this month and promises a story about "mind-expanding" technology and a follow-up to the show's popular USS Callister episode.

The new series will launch on 10 April, with Irish actor Chris O'Dowd slated to appear in one of the episodes. Guardians Of The Galaxy’s Will Poulter, Hard Truths’ Michele Austin and People Just Do Nothing’s Asim Chaudhry are also among the latest cast members to be announced.

In this run of episodes, characters will be seen putting on technology which alters their "neural structure", playing violent video games and working with artificial intelligence (AI).

The USS Callister ship from the show's fourth series will be part of a new story, having been at the centre of a tale about a sci-fi video game and misuse of power in its first appearance.

Further cast members announced include Ben Bailey Smith (Andor), Josh Finan (Say Nothing), James Nelson-Joyce (A Thousand Blows), Jay Simpson (The Day Of The Jackal), and Michael Workeye (This Is Going to Hurt).

5. Andor, Season 2, Disney+, 22 April

The final outing of the critically acclaimed Star Wars prequel series, will consist of twelve episodes, released in four chapters, each containing three episodes.

The first chapter will debut on 22 April, with subsequent chapters following weekly.

The narrative will span four years, leading up to the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Key returning characters include Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), Luthen Rael (Stellan Skarsgård), Mon Mothma (Genevieve O'Reilly), and Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker). Ben Mendelsohn will reprise his role as Director Orson Krennic, and Alan Tudyk will return as K-2SO.

The final trailer for Season 2 teases intense action sequences, the looming presence of the Death Star, and the deepening commitment of the Rebel Alliance against the Empire.

6. You, Season 5, Netflix, 24 April

Penn Badgley's Joe is back in New York for the final season, with all ten episodes premiering on 24 April.

In this final chapter, Joe and his wife, Kate (Charlotte Ritchie), return to the Big Apple after years of living abroad. Kate now leads the Lockwood Corporation, and Joe attempts to leave his tumultuous past behind.

However, his dark tendencies resurface, threatening the stability of his new life.

Pitch Perfect's Anna Camp will join the cast as twins Raegan and Maddie Lockwood, Joe's new sisters-in-law, while Griffin Matthews will play Teddy Lockwood, Raegan, Maddie, and Kate's brother.

Madeleine Brewer will adopt the persona of Bronte - Joe's newest obsession.

As Joe grapples with his previous actions and obsessions, the final season explores whether he can truly escape his past or if it will catch up to him.

Music

7. Bon Iver, Sable, Fable, 11 April

Bon Iver are set to release their fifth studio album, Sable, Fable which serves as a continuation of their 2024 EP, Sable.

The EP marks a return to the stripped-back indie folk sound reminiscent of their earlier work, notably For Emma, Forever Ago (2007) and Blood Bank (2009).

Produced by Justin Vernon and Jim-E Stack, the album was primarily recorded at Vernon's April Base studio in Wisconsin and features collaborations with artists such as Dijon, Flock of Dimes, and Danielle Haim.

To promote the album, Bon Iver have released singles such as Everything Is Peaceful Love and If Only I Could Wait, the latter featuring vocals from Haim.
