Pick of the Day

Kinahan: The True Story of Ireland's Mafia, 10.40pm, BBC One

This is a four-part documentary following the Kinahans from a small-time street-dealing gang in 1980s’ Dublin to its status today as one of the world’s most feared crime organisations.

It’s a story of underworld feuding, double-dealing, betrayal and gangland assassinations, from the streets of Ireland and the UK to the Netherlands, Spain, Dubai and America.

Today, the United States has a $5 million bounty on the heads of senior cartel members, godfather Christopher 'Christy' Kinahan and his two sons Daniel (below) and Christy Junior.

The cartel is wanted for drugs and firearms trafficking, money laundering and murder.

To date, Daniel and Christy Junior have never been convicted of any serious crimes, and all three Kinahans remain at large.

The Kinahan story starts almost half a century ago in inner-city Dublin, where Christy Kinahan Senior emerged as a heroin trafficker, before moving to the Netherlands in the 1990s.

There, he built his crime gang into a cartel, shifting hundreds of millions of pounds worth of drugs. At the same time, his sons Daniel and Christy Junior were being primed by their father to join the family business.

With the help of exclusive interviews, new insight and detail, this series tells the astonishing tale of the Kinahan family and their incredible journey to the top table of international organised crime.

At first the site grew on the back of celebrities who realised it offered them a direct way to communicate with fans.

After going global, it seemed to be fulfilling the founders' dream of a digital utopia where all voices would be heard.

But as hate speech and misinformation flooded the platform, the founders faced growing problems to control it - and the sale to Elon Musk in 2022 represented the end of their dream.

Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer, Netflix

Young women who worked in the sex industry were disappearing from New York City and Long Island and their families were desperate for answers.

Then in 2010, female remains were found in the Gilgo Beach area of Long Island, leading to a string of additional discoveries at a virtual dumping ground steps away from New York’s busiest beaches.

Despite all of this, the case of the "Long Island serial killer" remained unsolved for 13 years - until July 2023, when a major break came after corruption was rooted out within the police responsible for the case.

From two-time Academy Award-nominated and Emmy-winning director Liz Garbus (Lost Girls) comes the definitive look at the twists and turns in a case that dominated headlines, and is still developing in real time.

Promised Hearts, Netflix

This is a romantic drama from Indonesia. Should be interesting in terms of cultural differences between there and this part of the world.
