Jazzhole: niiiiiice . . .
Jazzhole: niiiiiice . . .

American acid jazz act Jazzhole have released their new album, Moonlight Mile. We asked them the BIG questions . . .

Now in their thirtieth year, Jazzhole are an evolving collective of many of New York's most accomplished live and studio musicians. Their line-up has changed since their self-titled debut but the band’s core songwriting and production trio Warren Rosenstein, Marlon Saunders, and John Pondel remains.

Moonlight Mile is the culmination of a road trip that started in Woodstock, making stops in NYC and Nashville, and ended up in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.

Peter Levin (Greg Allman, Blind Boys of Alabama) joined Jazzhole bassist David Inniss and drummer Mark Robohm at Fame Studios, while trumpeter Randy Brecker and tabla player Prabhu Edouard added overdubs from remote locations.

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

Warren Rosenstein (keyboards): Jazzhole had our 30th birthday this year. Our all-time favourite place to play has been the Montreal Jazz Festival. We believe we have done the only hip hop track in 3/4 time that we have ever heard

How would you describe your music?

John Pondel (guitar): A blend of acid-jazz, neo-soul and modern R&B, hip-hop and contemporary jazz woven in. The Jazzhole combines live instrumentation with electronic textures. The music is sophisticated yet accessible to listeners who appreciate smooth, atmospheric vibes mixed with dynamic vocals and urban influences.

Who are your musical inspirations?

David Inniss (bass): Jean-Paul Bourelly, Jimi Hendrix, Herbie Hancock.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

David: Jean-Paul Bourelly.

What was the first record you ever bought?

David: Hot Pants by James Brown.

What’s your favourite song right now?

Mark Robohm (drums): Musical taste is fickle, but today I have been vibing What It IS by Amber Mark. Tomorrow, likely, Dethroned.

Favourite lyric of all time?

David: "I start to think and then I sink into the paper like I was ink".

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Warren: It would be Love TKO by Teddy Pendergrass. The mood, the groove, the singing - it just never gets tired.
