Charlotte OC has released her new single, God, We Tried, from her forthcoming EP. We asked her the BIG questions . . .

Described as "a poignant and raw reflection on love, loss, and grief," the track was written in the aftermath of Charlotte's father passing.

"This song is deeply personal to me, I started writing it shortly after my dad passed away," she says.

"In my grief, I ended up in a relationship during this time that probably wasn’t the healthiest choice for me, and I wasn’t truly allowing myself to heal. If I think about it, all I wanted was a male figure in my life, to fill a void.

"I started to write this song the day after we decided to part ways. God, We Tried reflects the end of that relationship and the emotional complexity of trying to make something work when it really wasn’t right. It’s about love, loss, and the struggle to move forward while still processing deep grief."

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

Born in Blackburn. Made by an Irish father and half-Malawian, half-Indian mother. My nickname is Kenny.

How would you describe your music?

God, I’m not sure. I’m drawn to moody, dramatic, and emotionally charged sounds, and I think that’s where I tend to lean when it comes to creating my music.

Who are your musical inspirations?

I feel like grief has been an inspiration to me on my upcoming EP. Losing my dad sent me west, and some songs on the EP were inspired by that. But I grew up listening to John Martyn, Leonard Cohen, Aretha Franklin, Talking Heads, and James Taylor.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

My mum took me to see Alicia Keys when I was 13 at Manchester Apollo, and it was when Songs in A Minor had just been released. Yeah, she blew my mind to be honest and set the fire in me to want to pursue music.

What was the first record you ever bought?

It was Lisa Left-Eyed Lopez’s Block Party. It’s such a weird song, but my god, did it get me going when I was 10 years old. Still does, to be fair.

What’s your favourite song right now?

I’m listening to The Broadcast at the moment. Amazing band. Also listening to Soft Spot on JSMN on repeat.

Favourite lyric of all time?

"I remember that time you told me, You said, Love is touching souls, Surely you touched mine, Cause part of you pours out of me, In these lines from time to time" -

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Roscoe (beyond the wizard sleeve remix) by Midlake.
