Gladiator Cyclone
Gladiator Cyclone

There's a lot of musical theatre tonight, topped by Big Night of Musicals 2025, Naomie Harris and Natalie Dormer duel in The Wasp, there’s the first semi-final Gladiators, as well as GAA and rugby action . . .

Pick of the Day

Big Night of Musicals 2025 by the National Lottery, 6.50pm, BBC One

I'm hopelessly biased here as I love musical theatre.

Anyway, Jason Manford (below) hosts a musical celebration from Manchester's massive AO Arena, with showstopping performances and special guests.

Daniel Mays joins Jason for a special musical number, Vicky McClure's Our Dementia Choir take on a classic with Michael Ball and Marisha Wallace performs Maybe This Time from Cabaret.

There are also appearances from Layton Williams, Billy Porter, Ruthie Henshall, Faye Tozer and Carrie Hope Fletcher, plus appearances from the casts of Chicago, Mary Poppins, Mean Girls and Disney's Hercules.

New or Returning Shows

Show Tunes at the BBC: Volume 2, 8.25pm, BBC Two

As The Big Night of Musicals ends on BBC One, Elaine Paige (below) keeps the show running by rustling up a fresh selection of tunes from favourite musicals.

They include Les Misérables, Oklahoma!, Hamilton and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and feature Shirley Bassey, Alfie Boe, Hugh Jackman and Barbara Dickson and more.

Then at 9.55pm it's Elaine Paige again with Show Tunes at the BBC, including numbers from Cats, The Lion King, Funny Girl, My Fair Lady, Sunset Boulevard, West Side Story, A Little Night Music and The Sound of Music.

Finally, at 11.25pm there’s Sings Musicals, with memorable versions of songs that features stars ranging from Ella Fitzgerald to Captain Sensible, as well as performances by Jeff Beck and Jay-Z.

New to Stream

The Wasp, Sky Cinema Premiere & NOW

Adapted by Morgan Lloyd Malcom from her acclaimed play of the same name, this drama is a twisty tale about two estranged childhood friends, Heather (Naomie Harris) and Carla (Natalie Dormer).

They reunite for a cup of tea after not having spoken in many years.

At their meeting, Heather presents a very unexpected proposition that will change their lives forever.

Don’t Miss

Gladiators, 5.50pm, BBC One

Bradley and Barney Walsh (below) host the first of this year's semi-finals.

New Gladiator Cyclone doesn't hide her frustration in the locker room, an incredible performance in Powerball sets an all-time high score, and Viper takes his anger out on an unsuspecting crowd member's poster.

Comic Relief, 4.30pm, BBC One

If you missed last night Comic Relief - or couldn't be bothered watching it for hours on end - here are the 2025 highlights.

Rosie Ramsey takes a look back at the key and memorable moments of this year's charity extravaganza, reliving an incredible night of fundraising, comedy and entertainment.

Saturday Cinema

The Proposal, 10.30pm, BBC One

Unless you're one of those miserable types who can't take a fun-but-formulaic film on its merits and have a laugh, this will send you to the leaba with a massive grin on your face.

It's a romantic comedy, starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds, with the former playing a Canadian publishing editor working in New York who faces deportation to her own country.

Desperate to stay in America, she offers her assistant (guess who?) a promotion if he will marry her, but an immigration official becomes suspicious and the pair are forced to go to desperate lengths to look like a happy couple.

The same goes for Plane (9.15pm, Channel 4), a formulaic-but-fun adventure rollercoaster ride starring Gerard Butler.

One Fine Morning, 9.00pm, BBC Four

Here’s a real alternative to The Proposal.

It’s a romantic drama, starring the always impressive Lea Seydoux, who generated rave reviews for her performance here.

Working as a freelance interpreter, single mother Sandra Seydoux) lives with her eight-year-old daughter in Paris.

As she comes to terms with the painful deterioration of her father, who is suffering from a rare form of dementia, she runs into Clement, an old friend, and they embark on an affair.

Family Flick

Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway, 6.35pm, RTÉ One

Adventure sequel, starring Rose Byrne and Domhnall Gleeson, with the voice of James Corden as Peter Rabbbit.

Thomas and Bea are now married and living with Peter and his rabbit family.

Bored of life in the garden, Peter goes to the big city, where he meets shady characters and ends up creating chaos for the whole family.

Sport

Saturday GAA Live, 7.20pm, RTÉ2

Joanne Cantwell is joined by Anthony Daly and Liam Sheedy to present coverage of the Allianz Hurling League match at SuperValu Pairc Ui Chaoimh between Cork and Galway (Throw-in 7.30pm).

URC Live, 4.30pm, RTÉ2

A double bill of live URC action opens in South Africa with Vodacom Bulls v Leinster (KO 3pm).

Daire O'Brien is joined by Bernard Jackman, Darren Cave and Fiona Coghlan to present all the action from the match at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria.

Leinster have been in excellent form so far this season, winning their first 12 matches in the competition, but they face arguably their biggest test yet against the South African outfit, who defeated them 25-20 here in last season's semi-finals.

Then at 5pm the focus moves to Ospreys v Connacht (KO 5.15pm) at Swansea.com Stadium.

These two sides are among a number of teams fighting for a place in the quarter-finals, and Connacht will be looking for a repeat of their 34-26 home win when the teams met at Dexcom Stadium last season.
