No joy for Kneecap in Oscar nominations

Hopes had been high that Kneecap would receive two Oscar nominations for their acclaimed biopic
Hopes had been high that Kneecap would receive two Oscar nominations for their acclaimed biopic

Kneecap has missed out on Oscar nominations in the Best International Feature Film and Best Original Song categories on a day when the film Emilia Peréz received the most nominations.

Watch: The Oscar nominations in six key categories.

Kneecap, the musical biopic about the west Belfast rap trio of the same name, had been widely tipped to be among the Oscar nominees.

There were groans of disappointment in Belfast's Madden's Bar as dozens of fans, as well as cast and crew, crammed in to watch the nominations while members of the group watched from a live link in London.

Reacting on social media, Kneecap wrote: "F*** the Oscars. Free Palestine."

The controversial Donald Trump biopic The Apprentice, produced by Irish production company Tailored Films, has received Oscar nominations in the Best Actor (Sebastian Stan) and Best Supporting Actor (Jeremy Strong) categories.

Watch: Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong discuss The Apprentice.

Commenting on The Apprentice's Oscar nominations, Ruth Treacy and Julianne Forde from Tailored Films said of the Canadian/Irish/Danish co-production: "It's a huge honour to have our film recognised by our peers in the film industry across the world with multiple nominations at the Oscars, BAFTAs, and IFTAs.

"It's a massive testament to the strength of the Irish film industry and the talent available here that the film is receiving acclaim not only from audiences and critics, but from the wider filmmaking industry.

"We're delighted to be able to be a part of the film and to spread the word about the wealth of talent available in Ireland to international production partners."

Conclave's Lisburn-born editor Nick Emerson is nominated in the Best Editing category.

In the Live Action Short category, Irish hopes had been pinned on Room Taken, directed by TJ O'Grady Peyton, and Clodagh, directed by Portia A Buckley, but neither made the final five.

Netflix's musical crime comedy Emilia Peréz leads this year's Oscar nominations with 13 - a record for a non-English-language film.
