Colin Farrell has won Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or a Motion Picture Made for Television at the Golden Globes in California for his role in the DC Comics adaptation The Penguin.

Farrell and Ripley's Irish star Andrew Scott had both been nominated in the category. It is Farrell's third Golden Globe win, having previously won for his performances in The Banshees of Inisherin and In Bruges.

The winners are chosen by 334 entertainment journalists from 85 countries.

Speaking as he accepted his award at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Dubliner Farrell joked that he had "no one to thank on this one - I did it all by myself!"

Another Golden moment for Colin Farrell

"You all know it takes a village," he continued.

He went on to tell the star-studded audience that he spent three hours in the make-up chair every day for his titular role in The Penguin - and that he would be using prosthetics "from here on out".

"In the morning, I drank black coffee, listened to 80s music, and I became a canvas for that team's brilliance," he recounted.

He also thanked fellow Irish nominee Scott who, he said, he did his first film with 25 years ago - Drinking Crude - but that it can't be found anywhere!

"You can't even find it on Betamax," he said. "It doesn't exist. But we go back that far."

Succession star Kieran Culkin secured his second Golden Globe for his role in A Real Pain, beating the likes of Denzel Washington for Gladiator II and Guy Pearce for The Brutalist.

Jodie Foster scored another Golden Globe win for her role in True Detective: Night Country, beating Kate Winslet for The Regime and Cate Blanchett for Disclaimer in the Best Female Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or a Motion Picture Made for Television category.

Despite not winning in their respective categories, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande took to the stage alongside the cast of Wicked to collect the gong for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.

Director Jon M Chu said: "In a time where pessimism and cynicism rule the planet, that we can still make art that is a radical act of optimism that is empowerment and that is joy … this means so much to all of us."

The Golden Globes, hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser, will air on RTÉ2 on Monday from 9:00pm.
