2024 brought a mix of excitement and emotion to the world of entertainment.

Oasis reunited for a sold-out tour, marking a major moment in music, while Colin Farrell joined Emma Fogarty to cross the Dublin Marathon finish line in a show of resilience and friendship.

Reflecting on the highs and lows, we revisit the stories that shaped the year in entertainment.

2 January

Ryan Tubridy kicks off new radio show in UK

Former RTÉ presenter Ryan Tubridy began his new radio show on London-based Virgin Radio UK.

The weekday radio show airs 10am to 1pm on the station and is simulcast in Ireland on Q102.

Tubridy announced the move after his permanent departure from RTÉ was confirmed in August 2023.

His departure came after a well-documented payments scandal, leading to RTÉ suffering significant financial and reputational damage, as well as instigating a programme of cuts and voluntary redundancies at the broadcaster.

Tubridy kicked off his new show by saying he has "so much to do and so much to say", before playing U2's Pride (In the Name of Love), followed by the Backstreet Boys' I Want It That Way.


7 January

Cillian Murphy wins Golden Globe for Best Actor

Cillian Murphy won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama for his performance in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer - one of five wins for the blockbuster biopic at this year’s award ceremony.

After making his way to the stage in Beverly Hills to accept the award, the Cork actor said: "Oh boy... The first question is: do I have lipstick all over my nose? I'm going to leave it."

He added: "To all my fellow nominees, if you're Irish or not, you're all legends, stunning work - I salute you."


11 January

Conan O’Brien traces his Irish toots to Limerick village

US comedian and TV host Conan O’Brien visited an Irish village where his great-grandfather is from as he traced his Irish roots.

He posted on social media about his travels in Ireland and a meeting with a genealogist.

He also met a local man in the village of Galbally, Co Limerick, who showed him where his great-grandfather lived before he emigrated in the late 1870s.


19 January

Muireann Bradley wows audience on the Late Late Show

Prodigiously Donegal teenager and blues singer Muireann Bradley made her Late Late Show debut.

The singer and guitarist shot to prominence after her appearance on Jools Holland's Hootenanny programme on BBC Two on New Year's Eve.

Performing When The Levee Breaks on The Late Late Show, the teenager said that she gained a love of ragtime and blues growing up, as her dad John listened to that genre and also played it himself.


26 January

Bambie Thug chosen to represent Ireland at Eurovision Song Contest

Bambie Thug was chosen represent Ireland at the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö, Sweden.

The 30-year-old Cork native, whose real name is Bambie Ray Robinson, represented Ireland with their genre-shifting track Doomsday Blue.

The non-binary artist's music has been described by critics as electro-rap, confrontational performance art and effervescent, late-night goth pop.


Kneecap film wins at Sundance

Belfast rap trio Kneecap kicked off what was to be a stellar year when they won a coveted prize for their self-titled film at one of the world's most prestigious film festivals.

The autobiographical picture tells the story of the band - Móglaí Bap, Mo Chara and DJ Próvaí - and their efforts to break into the music industry.

It won the Audience Award: NEXT at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.


4 February

Taylor Swift makes Grammy history

Taylor Swift made Grammy history by becoming the first person to win Album of the Year four times as female acts had a bumper year at the music gong show.

US megastar Swift, 34, secured the top gong of the night with her tenth studio album, Midnights, at the 66th annual ceremony.

Billie Eilish took home Song of the Year for her Barbie hit What Was I Made For?, while Miley Cyrus landed Record of the Year for her track Flowers, which was a massive hit in Ireland.

Celine Dion, 55, also made a surprise appearance at the show to present Album of the Year, amid her battle with a rare neurological condition known as Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS).


16 February

Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard named as new This Morning hosts

Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard were confirmed by ITV as the new presenting duo for This Morning.

The pair took over from the previous permanent hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield, who both left ITV's flagship morning show last year.

Shephard and Deeley have both previously presented the show on separate occasions.


18 February

Cillian Murphy and Poor Things win big at Baftas

Cillian Murphy was named Best Actor at the BAFTA Film Awards in London for his work on Oppenheimer while Poor Things, produced by the Dublin-based Element Pictures, won five awards.

The Cork star became the first Irish-born performer to win the film BAFTA for Best Actor. Saltburn star Barry Keoghan had also been nominated in the Best Actor category.

Poor Things and Earth Mama, which includes Irish filmmakers Shirley O'Connor and Medb Riordan as producers, were also among the winners.


21 February

Barry Keoghan bares all in Saltburn

Barry Keoghan said he felt his nudity scene in Saltburn was "true vulnerability" as he paid homage to the viral moment in Vanity Fair's Hollywood issue photoshoot.

In Emerald Fennell’s black comedy, the Irish actor plays a student at Oxford who becomes enthralled by a wealthier classmate and pays a visit to his sprawling estate.

At the end of the film, he can be seen dancing around the manor house in the nude to Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s hit Murder On The Dance Floor, propelling the song back into the charts.


5 March

Dan Wootton leaves GB News after Ofcom finding

TV presenter Dan Wootton left GB News after UK media watchdog Ofcom found comments made on his show by Laurence Fox about a female journalist broke broadcasting rules.

Actor-turned-politician Fox made the comments about political correspondent Ava Evans during an episode of Dan Wootton Tonight in September last year.

Neither Fox nor Wootton said sorry while on air after the comments were made, but they did subsequently offer apologies. Ofcom received 8,867 complaints about the broadcast.


7 March

Jury finds armourer guilty in Rust shooting case

A US jury found Rust armourer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed guilty of involuntary manslaughter, ending a trial over Hollywood's first on-set fatal shooting in nearly 30 years.

Ten days of testimony focused on whether the relatively inexperienced armourer endangered fellow crew and cast members in her handling and supervision of firearms on the low-budget production set in New Mexico.

Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer ordered that Gutierrez-Reed be taken into custody immediately.


10 March

'Proud Irishman' Cillian Murphy wins Best Actor Oscar

Oppenheimer's Cillian Murphy became the first Irish-born star to win the Oscar for Best Actor at the Academy Awards in Los Angeles in March, with Poor Things, produced by the Dublin-based Element Pictures, winning in four categories, including Best Actress for Emma Stone.

Oppenheimer was the big winner on the night with seven Academy Awards, while Murphy accepted his Oscar to a standing ovation.

"I'm a little bit overwhelmed," the Cork man said on stage in the Dolby Theatre, while he also saluted his fellow nominees, saying: "I'm in awe of you guys."

Pierce Brosnan 'deeply regrets' walking off-trail at Yellowstone

Pierce Brosnan pleaded guilty to stepping off a trail in a thermal area during a visit to Yellowstone National Park in the US.

The former James Bond star was fined $500 (€460) and ordered to make a donation of $1,000 (€920) to Yellowstone Forever, a non-profit organisation that supports the park, according to court documents.

The 70-year-old pleaded guilty to "foot travel in all thermal areas and within Yellowstone Canyon confined to trails", on 1 November last year, while the second charge of violating closures and use limits was dismissed by US Judge Stephanie Hambrick.


17 March

Jason Smyth and Karen Byrne win Dancing with the Stars

Paralympian Jason Smyth and his professional dance partner Karen Byrne were crowned the winners of Dancing with the Stars 2024.

The new champions saw off the challenge of Wild Youth's David Whelan and his professional dance partner Salome Chachua; 2FM's Laura Fox and her professional dance partner Denys Samson; and RuPaul's Drag Race champion Blu Hydrangea and her professional dance partner Simone Arena to take the glitterball trophy.

"For me, and I've said it many times, the message is about looking at what is possible," Smyth said after the result was announced.

Ariana Grande and Dalton Gomez finalise divorce

Ariana Grande officially divorced Dalton Gomez after almost three years of marriage.

A Los Angeles Superior Court judgment dissolving their marriage of nearly three years became official six months after the pop star filed a petition to divorce the property broker.

The two separated more than a year ago, according to court papers. They had a pre-nuptial agreement, had no children and no significant legal disputes in the split, allowing it to move quickly and cleanly through the court system.

Cameron Diaz and Benji welcomed a baby boy

Hollywood star Cameron Diaz and Good Charlotte musician Benji Madden announced the birth of their first son, Cardinal Madden.

The couple, who welcomed a daughter, Raddix, in December 2019, have been married since 2015.

In a joint Instagram post, they wrote: "We are blessed and excited to announce the birth of our son, Cardinal Madden.

"He is awesome and we are all so happy he is here! For the kid's safety and privacy we won't be posting any pictures – but he's really cute."

Rebel Wilson felt 'sexually harassed' by Baron Cohen

Rebel Wilson claimed "It felt like Sacha Baron Cohen had sexually harassed me" on the set of their 2016 film Grimsby.

In her memoir Rebel Rising, the Australian actress accused the British comedy star of incidents of inappropriate behaviour when she played his on-screen girlfriend in the Louis Leterrier-directed film.

She said her aim was not to cancel Baron Cohen with her recollections but to retell an experience which made her feel "completey disrespected, which led to me treating myself with even more disrespect by eating in an extremely unhealthy way".

Taylor Swift becomes music's first billionaire

According to Forbes magazine, global superstar Taylor Swift's musical career made her a billionaire.

The 34-year-old pop star accumulated S1.1 billion (€1.2 billion), base earnings from her Eras Tour and the worth of her pop music catalogue.

"Swift is the first musician to hit 10-figure status solely based on her songs and performances," Forbes said.


5 April

Sacha Baron Cohen and Isla Fisher announce divorce

Sacha Baron Cohen and Isla Fisher announced that they were divorcing after almost 14 years of marriage.

The acting duo, best known for their comedic film roles, both posted the same statement to their Instagram stories, along with a photo of them in tennis gear.

"After a long tennis match lasting over twenty years, we are finally putting our racquets down," the statement said.

It continued: "In 2023 we jointly filed to end our marriage. We have always prioritised our privacy, and have been quietly working through this change."


8 April

Jonathan Majors sentenced to probation for assault

American actor Jonathan Majors was sentenced to probation, avoiding time in jail, for assaulting his ex-girlfriend.

Majors, 34, the star of Creed III and other films, had faced up to a year behind bars after he was convicted of misdemeanour assault by a Manhattan jury in December.

The conviction stems from an altercation in March 2023 in which Majors' then-girlfriend Grace Jabbari accused him of attacking her in the backseat of a chauffeured car, saying he hit her head with his open hand, twisted her arm behind her back, and squeezed her middle finger until it fractured.


15 April

Rust armourer sentenced to 18 months over fatal shooting

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the chief weapons handler for the Western movie Rust, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, who was shot when actor Alec Baldwin was handling a gun during the film's production in 2021.

Last month, Gutierrez-Reed, 27, was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter for mistakenly loading a live round into a revolver Mr Baldwin was using on a New Mexico movie set.

The shooting, which stunned Hollywood, is believed to be the first time in modern times that a member of a film crew or cast was killed by a live round accidentally loaded into a gun.

IFTA winner Cillian Murphy: 'I'm still brutal at this'

Cillian Murphy and Irish crime drama Kin were among the big winners at the 2024 Irish Television and Film Academy Awards.

Murphy won the Lead Actor award for his Oscar-winning role in Oppenheimer, Agnes O'Casey won Lead Actress for Lies We Tell and Kin picked up five awards, including Best Drama.

Director Neil Jordan presented actor Stephen Rea, who has appeared in many of Jordan's films including The Crying Game and The End of The Affair, with the IFTA Lifetime Achievement Award.


22 April

Hozier becomes the fourth Irish artist ever to top the US Billboard 100 chart

Hozier became the first Irish artist since Sinead O'Connor, and only the fourth Irish artist ever, to have a No 1 in the US on the Billboard 100 song charts.

Hozier’s Too Sweet went to No. 1 from No. 2 last week, three weeks after it debuted at No. 5.

In 2014, his breakthrough hit Take Me to Church reached No. 2 in that chart.


29 April

Adam Clayton and Mariana Teixeira de Carvalho divorce

U2 bassist Adam Clayton announced that he had "amicably divorced" from Brazilian lawyer Mariana Teixeira de Carvalho.

The pair were married for ten years and have a daughter.

In a statement to RTÉ, a spokesperson for the musician said: "After more than ten years of marriage, musician Adam Clayton and lawyer Mariana Teixeira de Carvalho have amicably divorced.

"Both will continue to be fully involved in the care of their daughter and they request that the family's privacy be respected."

President Higgins celebrates 25 years of RTÉ lyric fm

In a message of congratulations to the station on reaching its milestone birthday President Michael D. Higgins said: "Over the past quarter-century, lyric fm has truly enhanced the cultural landscape of Ireland, showcasing the beauty and diversity of not just classical music but also such a wide range of music that includes traditional, jazz, world music, musicals and film scores.

"It has drawn on such an incredibly diverse range which is one of the station's greatest strengths. In embracing contemporary compositions and bringing innovative, insightful programming to audiences nationwide, the station has become an integral part of our artistic tapestry. It represents public service broadcasting at its best."

Gavin and Stacey announce return for Christmas Day finale

BBC sitcom Gavin and Stacey announced the show will return for its last-ever episode on Christmas Day.

The hit TV series about a couple who commit to a long-distance relationship last aired in 2019 for a one-off festive episode which ended on a cliffhanger.

James Corden and Ruth Jones' smash-hit Gavin and Stacey returns to the BBC for one last hurrah on Christmas Day

In an Instagram post, writer and star James Corden shared an image of him and fellow creator Ruth Jones with a 2024 script titled: "Gavin and Stacey: The finale."

He wrote: "Some news… It's official!!! We have finished writing the last ever episode of Gavin and Stacey. See you on Christmas Day, BBC One. Love Ruth and James."

Doireann Garrihy to leave RTÉ 2FM after five years

Doireann Garrihy announced she was leaving RTÉ 2FM after five years, saying she wants to "pursue the projects I've been dreaming about".

In a statement, the 2FM Breakfast presenter said that she was "so glad" that the head of RTÉ 2FM, Dan Healy, "took a chance" on her in 2019, but said it was now "time for ventures new".

Hailey and Justin Bieber share lovely baby news

Hailey and Justin Bieber announced that they were expecting their first child.

The couple, who tied the knot in a secret ceremony in New York in 2018, shared a video and images from a photoshoot of Hailey debuting her bump in a white lace dress during an apparent vow renewal held in a field.

Among the famous faces celebrating the news were US reality star and entrepreneur Kim Kardashian and model Gigi Hadid.

Switzerland wins Eurovision, Ireland comes sixth

Switzerland's Nemo was crowned the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 winner following an eventful competition in Malmö, Sweden, while Ireland's Bambie Thug finished sixth place.

The Swiss non-binary artist triumphed at this year's contest with their track The Code, marking the third time Switzerland triumphed at the contest. The country won the very first edition of the Eurovision Song Contest in 1956 and in 1988 with Celine Dion's Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi.

Tearfully accepting the trophy, Nemo said: "I want to say thank you so much – I hope this contest can live up to its promise and continue to stand for peace and dignity for every person in this world."

Operation Transformation to end after 17 seasons

RTÉ announced that Operation Transformation was to end after 17 seasons.

Operation Transformation has been part of the RTÉ One line-up since 2008

In a statement, RTÉ said: "As series come to an end each year, RTÉ undertakes an editorial review to ensure the audience is being best served and to refresh and renew its slate of programming. The decision on Operation Transformation was communicated some weeks ago to those involved including the experts and stakeholders."

"The series, which kicked off in 2008, initially saw presenter Gerry Ryan select hopefuls on his RTÉ 2FM radio show, following them as they attempted to reshape and reboot their lives, guided by experts in the fields of nutrition, weight loss, and psychology."

Girls Aloud honour Sarah Harding at Dublin concert

Girls Aloud performed the first night of their reunion tour, honouring late bandmate Sarah Harding.

Nadine Coyle, Cheryl, Nicola Roberts, and Kimberley Walsh appeared on stage to a delighted audience, 30 minutes later than scheduled due to "Dublin motorway closures".

The tour was dedicated to Harding, who was diagnosed with cancer and died in September 2021 aged 39.

Drive It with The 2 Johnnies to end on RTÉ 2FM

Drive It with The 2 Johnnies on RTÉ 2FM announced it was set to finish.

The popular podcasting duo, Johnny Smacks and Johnny B, joined the station in February 2022 where they hosted the weekday drivetime show.

Head of 2FM Dan Healy said: "After two very successful years, the 2 Johnnies are leaving 2FM. Johnny B and Johnny Smacks have brought their original South Tipp humour and interesting music choices to 2FM audiences right across Ireland.

"The listenership for the drivetime show has been very strong from the very start and the most recent listenership results continued that trend. They've been a great part of the 2FM family here and we'll be sad to see them go but wish them well as they continue their adventures."

Jennifer Zamparelli leaving RTÉ 2FM

RTÉ 2FM announced that Jennifer Zamparelli was leaving her daily show on the station.

In a statement, the broadcaster said: "Jennifer has presented her own show from 9-12pm weekdays on RTÉ 2FM since May 2019. She joined the station in February 2014."

It was the third high-profile departure in recent weeks from the station after The 2 Johnnies and Doireann Garrihy announced they were also leaving RTÉ 2FM.

Netflix accused of defamation in $170 million Baby Reindeer lawsuit

A woman claiming to have inspired Richard Gadd's hit TV series Baby Reindeer is seeking at least $170 million (€155 million) in a lawsuit filed against Netflix.

Fiona Harvey accused the streaming platform of defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence, gross negligence, and violations of her right of publicity in the lawsuit filed at the Californian federal court.

It comes after she claimed to be the inspiration behind the character of Martha Scott, who stalks Gadd's character Donny Dunn after he serves her a free cup of tea in the pub where he works.

Barry Keoghan stars in Sabrina Carpenter's latest music video

US singer Sabrina Carpenter released a new music video starring her then real-life boyfriend Dubliner Barry Keoghan.

Please, Please, Please is from Carpenter's sixth album Short n' Sweet.

The Bardia Zeinali-directed video sees the Carpenter sitting in a jail cell, having been arrested at the end of her Espresso music video, before catching the eye of her real-life boyfriend Keoghan as he gets dragged into prison.

Cork kid rappers Kabin Crew release their viral hit The Spark as single

After it became a massive online hit with over 350 million online views, young Cork rappers Kabin Crew teamed up with their friends in Lisdoonvarna Crew and released their track The Spark as a single.

The song was recorded by the children of the Kabin Studio, a repurposed metal container turned into a non-profit youth music space in Knocknaheeny on the northside of Cork City in 2012.

The music video for The Spark, shot by videographer Seán Downey aka SwanIGuess, was filmed in one day at the Kabin, on the top-deck of the 202 Bus and the Pavilion Music Venue in Cork.

Justin Timberlake arrested for driving while intoxicated

New York police confirmed that Justin Timberlake had been arrested for driving while intoxicated after he failed to maintain his lane of travel and pause at a stop sign.

The 43-year-old pop star and actor was arrested in the early hours of Tuesday morning in the wealthy village of Sag Harbor in New York, according to Robert Drake, chief of police at Sag Harbor Village Police Department.

Timberlake was held overnight and informed of the criminal charges against him in the morning before being released.

Donncha O'Callaghan to leave 2FM breakfast show

Donncha O'Callaghan announced that he was leaving the 2FM breakfast show.

In a statement on his Instagram account, the 45-year-old Corkman said, "I'm sure we'd all agree, it’s never easy to step away from something you really enjoy doing.

Taylor Swift breaks record with final Dublin gig at Aviva Stadium

Taylor Swift told fans she broke a record at the Aviva Stadium during the final concert of her trio of sold-out gigs at the Dublin venue, with a host of famous faces, including Travis Kelce and Julia Roberts, cheering her on.

The singer paid tribute to American footballer Kelce when she changed the lyrics in Karma to "Karma is the guy on the Chiefs coming straight home to me", much to the excitement of the crowd.

Following the concert, the couple was filmed leaving the venue hugging, holding hands and waving to fans.

'They were lovely' - Dublin's Hacienda hosts Swift

The owner of a Dublin pub has said he was 'delighted' to host Taylor Swift after the superstar finished up her three-night run of sell-out concerts at the Aviva Stadium.

Swift partied at the Hacienda Bar on Little Mary Street in the city centre, along with her boyfriend Travis Kelce, her musicians and dancers, support act Paramore, and legendary Fleetwood Mac singer, Stevie Nicks.

When RTÉ spoke to Shay Duignan the owner of the Hacienda Bar he said: "They were lovely. We were delighted to have them.

"It was a late one," he added.


8 July

Minaj pulls out of music festival day after Dublin gig

Nicki Minaj pulled out of a festival in Romania hours before she was scheduled to perform because of planned protests in the area causing "safety concerns", the day after she played at Malahide Castle in Dublin.

The US rapper, 41, said as a mother she had to make "sound decisions" so that she made it home to her son and her team returned to their families.

The Anaconda singer was scheduled to perform on the main stage at Saga Festival in Bucharest from 10.55pm to 12.10am local time, but announced on social media that she would not be attending.

Minaj irritated fans in Dublin when she arrived on stage an hour and a half late as they waited patiently in the rain.


12 July

British singer Paul Young married his Roscommon rose

British singer Paul Young tied the knot with his fianceé Lorna, who is reportedly from Roscommon.

The Eighties pop star's first wife Stacey, a model, died following a two-year battle with brain cancer in 2018.

Young wrote on Instagram: "Meet the new Mrs Young! Today I married the most wonderful girl. Thank you Lorna, this is one of the happiest days of my life."

The 68-year-old singer, known for the hits Wherever I Lay May Hat (That's My Home), Come Back And Stay, Love Of The Common People and Everytime You Go Away, shared the post along with an image of Lorna wearing a white dress and him in a blue suit.

Lorna shared the same image to Instagram, saying: "The happiest day ever! Today I married the most amazing man in the world. I love you Paul and I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you."

The pair had announced their engagement in October 2023.


15 July

Shannen Doherty finalised divorce hours before death

Shannen Doherty finalised her split from her husband, Kurt Iswarienko, just hours before her death at the age of 53, and she was granted a rare posthumous divorce two days later.

Doherty, the star of Beverly Hills, 90210 and Charmed, died on Saturday, 13 July, after years with breast cancer, her publicist said.

Los Angeles County court documents showed that Doherty and her lawyer Laura Wasser, who handled the divorces of Kim Kardashian, Britney Spears, Ariana Grande and many others, worked to finish the details of hers before she died.

Tenacious D tour axed over controversial Trump joke

Jack Black cancelled the rest of his band Tenacious D's world tour after his bandmate made a controversial "joke" about the attempted assassination of Donald Trump.

The School of Rock star said he was "blindsided" by Kyle Gass's remarks on stage, adding that "all future creative plans" for the duo are on hold.

The comedy-rock group were on stage in Sydney, Australia, when Gass was asked to make a birthday wish.

Gass sparked controversy when he replied: "Don’t miss Trump next time."

In a statement on Instagram, Black said: "I was blindsided by what was said at the show on Sunday.

"I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form.

"After much reflection, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour, and all future creative plans are on hold. I am grateful to the fans for their support and understanding."

In his apology posted to Instagram, Gass wrote: "The line I improvised onstage Sunday night in Sydney was highly inappropriate, dangerous and a terrible mistake. I don't condone violence of any kind, in any form, against anyone.

"What happened was a tragedy, and I'm incredibly sorry for my severe lack of judgment. I profoundly apologize to those I've let down and truly regret any pain I've caused."

New Zealand Rose Keely O'Grady chosen as the 2024 Rose of Tralee

New Zealand Rose Keely O'Grady was crowned the 2024 International Rose of Tralee as the festival concluded in Co Kerry.

O'Grady inherits the title from last year's winner, New York Rose Róisín Wiley.

The 2024 Rose of Tralee was chosen by the festival's four distinguished judges - fashion designer Don O'Neill, 1998 Rose of Tralee Luzveminda O'Sullivan, broadcaster Ollie Turner and RTÉ Weather and Lotto presenter Nuala Carey.

Kathryn Thomas, back for her second time presenting, and Rose of Tralee stalwart Dáithí Ó Sé put in an energetic effort as they introduced this year's 32 Roses over two nights at the Kerry Sports Academy.

Allsopp reported to social services over son's holiday

Location, Location, Location presenter, Kirstie Allsopp, said she was contacted by social services for allowing her teenage son to go on an interrailing trip.

The 52- year-old star said she permitted her 15-year-old son, Oscar, to go on a holiday across Europe with his 16-year-old friend this summer but had since been contacted by a social worker who informed her that a file had been opened after child protection concerns were raised.

Allsopp said officials did not understand that she had been targeted by someone falsely alleging neglect.

She told The Mail on Sunday: "I just felt sick – absolutely sick. Then I was cross. I was very, very cross.

"It was just so extraordinary. I was in a parallel universe where they were actually taking this seriously.

"I have broken no law and nothing about allowing my child to travel around Europe is neglectful."

Mariah Carey confirms deaths of her mother and sister

The mother and sister of Mariah Carey died in a "tragic turn of events", the singer confirmed.

The pair, named Patricia, who was Irish-American, and Alison respectively, died on the same day.

"My heart is broken that I've lost my mother this past weekend," Carey said in a statement.

"Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day.

"I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed.

"I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time."

Ballot registration for Oasis' Irish gigs opens ahead of general sale

Liam and Noel Gallagher announced dates at Croke Park as part of Oasis' comeback tour. The shows are at the venue on 16 and 17 August 2025.

The Britpop band, who split nearly 15 years ago and released their chart-topping album Definitely Maybe around three decades ago, announced a series of dates will kick off at Cardiff's Principality Stadium.

The UK and Ireland tour will also visit Manchester's Heaton Park, London’s Wembley Stadium and Edinburgh’s Murrayfield Stadium throughout July and August next year.

In a statement shared on Instagram, the US musician said: "I've recently become the father of a new baby daughter, born outside of my marriage. I plan to be a loving and supportive parent to her."

He continued: "I love my wife and my children, and I am doing everything I can to regain their trust and earn their forgiveness. We're grateful for your consideration toward all the children involved, as we move forward together."

Grohl did not share any further details about his new daughter or their mother.

Rhasidat Adeleke shared a sweet fangirl moment with Rihanna when they met at an event in London, with the pop superstar looking in awe at the Irish sprinter.

The Olympic athlete attended the launch of Rihanna's beauty brand Fenty Hair at Selfridges on Monday where they crossed paths and posed for photos.

In a video posted to Adeleke's Instagram page, Rihanna looked taken aback to meet the sprinter, putting her hand over her mouth in shock and saying: "Are you kidding me? I follow you!"

"I know!", Adeleke responded with a screech.

As they posed for photos, Rihanna pulled her in for a hug and said "Oh my god, I'm geeked!"

Rylan Clark has recalled how asking Spice Girl, Geri Halliwell, for her autograph got him fired from his first job in a London hairdressers.

Appearing on the Late Late Show the TV presenter and former X Factor contestant said, "I started out as a colour therapist when I was 16, 17 and I was a massive Spice Girls fan and Geri was my favourite. I always played Ginger Spice in the playground.

"On one of my first ever jobs as a trainee, Geri walks in and I was like `I can't breathe!’ and she was having her hair done and I brought her a coffee and said 'I’m so sorry, can I have your autograph?' and she was like, 'absolutely!' Loveliest woman ever.

"She signed her autograph and left, didn’t complain or anything, but my manager was an a******* and he sacked me on the spot, saying you never ask a client for their autograph.

Angela Scanlon gives powerful interview on anorexia

Angela Scanlon told Patrick Kielty on the Late Late Show that narrating the RTÉ One documentary Anorexia, My Family and Me "felt like a really important thing to do", and she hopes that people watching will realise "you can come out the other end".

"It follows the stories of three families who are all struggling with anorexia - for years, many of them," said Scanlon.

"I struggled with anorexia and bulimia for 15 years," she continued.

"So, for me, [it] felt like a really important thing to do because I think it hasn't been spoken about very openly in very many forums, and certainly when I was in the thick of it I don't remember switching on a telly and ever feeling like there was a story that I could kind of relate to or an experience depicted that was similar to what I was going through."

O'Carroll apologises for 'clumsy' Mrs Brown's Boys joke

Brendan O'Carroll apologised for a "clumsy" joke where a "racial term was implied" during rehearsals for the Mrs Brown's Boys Christmas special.

The BBC temporarily paused rehearsals to investigate the incident.

"At a read-through of the Mrs Brown's Boys Christmas specials, there was a clumsy attempt at a joke, in the character of Agnes, where a racial term was implied," O’Carroll said in a statement.

"It backfired and caused offence which I deeply regret and for which I have apologised."

A BBC spokesperson said: "Whilst we don’t comment on individuals, the BBC is against all forms of racism, and we have robust processes in place should issues ever arise."

Investigation after singer Liam Payne's death in Argentina

Police in Argentina opened an investigation following the death of singer and former One Direction band member Liam Payne, who died following a balcony fall.

A preliminary autopsy showed the 31-year-old singer suffered "internal and external bleeding" and "died from the fall".

The police found the star's room in "total disorder" in a search after his death with various things broken and medications scattered around.

RTÉ postpones new season of Ireland's Fittest Family after death

The first episode of the new season of Ireland's Fittest Family was postponed following the death of one of its participants.

In a statement, RTÉ confirmed that the decision to delay the broadcast was made after a participant passed away following the completion of filming.

"RTÉ and Kite/Animo productions wish to extend our deepest sympathies to the bereaved family and friends at this time. Further details regarding the broadcast of the series will be provided in due course," the statement said.

Colin Farrell, Emma Fogarty cross marathon finish line

Irish actor Colin Farrell and his close friend Emma Fogarty - the longest-surviving person in Ireland with a rare genetic skin condition called Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) - together crossed the finish line of Dublin City Marathon.


Fogarty, from Co Laois, joined Farrell for the final stretch of the marathon, with the actor pushing her wheelchair for the last four kilometres. Each kilometre represents a decade of Fogarty's life with the condition.

EB, often referred to as 'Butterfly Skin' causes severe blistering and open wounds, making it feel like living with third-degree burns. Sufferers, like Fogarty, must endure hours of daily bandaging to manage the condition.

Coldplay's Chris Martin falls through a trapdoor at gig

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin avoided injury and carried on with a gig after falling through a stage trapdoor while performing in Australia.

The 47-year-old could be seen chatting to fans in the crowd at Melbourne's Marvel Stadium on the final date of his band's Music Of The Spheres tour, before plummeting through the hidden door backwards, in footage posted to social media.

After the incident, Martin can be heard telling fans "That’s not planned" before going on to thank a member of production staff for catching him as he fell, adding: "Holy s***, that was nearly a YouTube moment."

The singer continued with the show following the incident and appeared unharmed.

Dawson Creek star James Van Der Beek appreciates 'all the love and support' after cancer diagnosis

Dawson's Creek star James Van Der Beek said he and his family "deeply appreciate all the love and support" after revealing his cancer diagnosis.

The American actor said in an interview with US publication People that he has been "privately dealing" with colorectal cancer, adding that "there's reason for optimism".

In a post on Instagram, acknowledging his diagnosis, the 47-year-old apologised to his loved ones who had learned of his cancer through the press.

He said: "'It is cancer…' Each year, approximately 2 billion people around the world receive this diagnosis. And I’m one of them.

"There’s no playbook for how (to) announce these things, but I’d planned on talking about it at length with People magazine at some point soon… to raise awareness and tell my story on my own terms.

Suzy Byrne pays emotional tribute to her late mother Kathleen Watkins

Kathleen Watkins and Gay Byrne's daughter Suzy said her late mother's "adoration of her grandchildren was renowned", adding that "what they've become is so much down to her".

Speaking to Joe Duffy on RTÉ Radio 1's Liveline, Ms Byrne said her late father, broadcaster Gay Byrne, always knew that becoming 'Nana Kit' was his wife's most important job.

Claudine Keane raises concerns for her family after online criticism

Claudine Keane said her family feels unsafe following online backlash over her husband Robbie Keane's former role with the Israeli football club Maccabi Tel Aviv.

The former model and columnist shared her concerns on social media, saying that certain messages have left her family feeling "uncomfortable" and "intimidated".

Mr Keane faced backlash last year when he continued managing Maccabi Tel Aviv as tensions rose between Israel and Palestine. He led the team to a league title before stepping down in June.

Pat Shortt paid tribute to his late D'Unbelievables co-star Jon Kenny, saying he was "lucky" to spend so many years touring with him and learning from him.

In a statement on X, Shortt wrote: "We are all devastated with the news of Jon passing...

"I was lucky to spend so many years touring with Jon and learning from him. Creating some great shows and videos. Hilarious hours in the rehearsal room and playing great tunes.

Elton John reveals he has 'lost his eyesight'

Elton John said he has "lost his eyesight" preventing him from watching his new musical.

The 77-year-old singer revealed in an Instagram post in September that his vision has been affected by an infection.

At the gala opening of the new musical The Devil Wears Prada, for which he has written the score, he thanked his husband, David Furnish, for being his "rock".

He told the audience: "I haven't been able to come to many of the previews because, as you know, I have lost my eyesight.

"So it's hard for me to see it, but I love to hear it and, boy, it sounded good tonight."

Irish actor Barry Keoghan responded to his name being "dragged across the internet" by asking for people to "please be respectful".

It followed reports that the Saltburn star, 32, and his girlfriend, US pop star Sabrina Carpenter, have split.

The movie star from Dublin said he had deactivated his Instagram account because he can "no longer" let the hatred he has received "distract from my family and my work".

In a post to X he said: "I can only sit and take so much. My name has been dragged across the internet in ways I usually don't respond too.

"I have to respond now because it’s getting to a place where there are too many lines being crossed.

Brazil judge orders Adele song be pulled globally

A Brazilian judge ordered a song by British pop superstar Adele, Million Years Ago, be pulled worldwide - including on streaming services - over an ongoing plagiarism claim by a Brazilian composer.

The injunction threatens the Brazilian subsidiaries of Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Music, Adele's labels, with a fine of $8,000 "per act of non-compliance."

The injunction was made by Judge Victor Torres in Rio de Janeiro's 6th Commercial Court, pending further activity in the continuing plagiarism case.

His preliminary injunction ordered Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Music to stop "immediately and globally, from using, reproducing, editing, distributing or commercializing the song Million Years Ago, by any modality, means, physical or digital support, streaming or sharing platform."
