This superb series continues with a deep burrow into the debut film by the great Mel Brooks, which - much later - led to a smash Broadway musical that itself led to a movie adaptation.

It's a hilarious film that mixes comedy and dark satire on the nature of art and showbiz, with fantastic performances from Zero Mostel, Gene Wilder and more.

It also sees Mel Brooks announce his gift for spoof as a desperate show producer and a naive accountant set out to make a fortune - through a Broadway flop.

First up, Strangers on a Train is based on the novel by Patricia Highsmith, and stars Robert Walker, Farley Granger and Ruth Roman.

Then at 10.35pm there's the magnificent Psycho, starring Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh (above), Vera Miles, Martin Balsam, John Gavin and John McIntire. This one's also based on a book, this time by Robert Bloch.

In between at 9.35pm, there's Hitchcock at the NFT, where Alfred Hitchcock speaks to fellow director Bryan Forbes at the National Film Theatre in London and answers questions from an audience of film enthusiasts.

Europa League Play-Off, 6.30pm, LOITV

It's a momentous night for Irish football as it's the first time two of our clubs participate in the play-offs.

No matter what happens between tonight and next Thursday’s second leg in Tallaght, Shamrock Rovers are guaranteed group stage football as defeat here would parachute them into the Conference League.

The Hoops are also no strangers to PAOK’s Toumba Stadium, having played there during their groundbreaking Europa League run in 2011. Rovers lost 2-1.

But this version of PAOK is a lot stronger than back then as the Greek champions have spent many millions to build a squad capable to reaching the latter stages of European competition.

Twice in recent years they’ve reached the quarter-finals of the Conference League and this time round their target is the latter stages of the Europa League.

Also tonight: Europa Conference League Play-off (7.45pm, Solid Sport).

Tallaght Stadium is the venue as Saint Patrick’s Athletic host crack Turkish side Istanbul Başakşehir FK for a place in the Conference League group stages.

Stephen Kenny’s Saints have done extremely well to get to the play-offs, but they’ll up against it here as Başakşehir have beaten the likes of Manchester United and Fiorentina and hammered Hearts in recent years.
