Pick of the Day

Woodstock: Three Days That Defined a Generation, 9.50pm, BBC Four

Excellent timing for this PBS documentary, as it coincides with the Electric Picnic. But that's also pretty much where the similarities end.

The original rock festival is so far removed from today's events, it's almost laughable.

In August 1969, more than 400,000 people from all walks of life converged on a small dairy farm in upstate New York to attend an outdoor pop concert.

But most of those who turned up experienced something far more profound - a moment that came to define a cultural revolution.

Through the voices of those who were there, the music of the time and unique imagery shot in situ of the protagonists and festival-goers, this documentary tells the story of the lead up to those three historic days.

It also - of course - reflects on those extraordinary moments when the concert, almost pulled off right at the last minute, put the ideals of the counterculture to the test.

There's a Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock doc afterwards at 11.15pm if you want to keep the vibe going, man.
