Classic Stories: The Making of Brief Encounter, 8.00pm, Sky Arts
Streaming on NOW
David Lean directed many great movies, but Brief Encounter is widely regarded - along with the likes of Lawrence of Arabia and Great Expectations - as one of his masterpieces.
This great little series hosted by Ian Nathan returns with a look at this devastatingly romantic story, written by Noel Coward, that was originally released in 1945.
It stars Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard (above) as a pair of plummy-voiced, stiff upper lip lovers who meet in a tearoom at a train station. It’s terribly old-fashioned and absolutely marvelous.

Then at 9pm there’s All the President's Men, Alan J Pakula's 1976 drama, starring Robert Redford, Dustin Hoffman, Jason Robards and Hal Holbrook.
It tells the true story of Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, who persevered in their investigation of the links between the Watergate break-in and the White House.
It was a scandal that eventually forced the resignation of US President Nixon.
