Universal Pictures has acquired the rights to Britney Spears's bestselling memoir The Woman in Me, which filmmaker Jon M Chu (Crazy Rich Asians, Wicked) will direct for the big screen.

US entertainment trade publication Variety says the biopic will be produced by Marc Platt (Legally Blonde, La La Land).

Writing on X, Spears said: "Excited to share with my fans that I've been working on a secret project with #MarcPlatt. He's always made my favorite movies ... stay tuned".

The Woman in Me was released last October.

Variety reports that Universal Pictures secured the rights "in a highly competitive auction".
At the time of the book's publication, Spears said: "I poured my heart and soul into my memoir, and I am grateful to my fans and readers around the world for their unwavering support."
