Singer and rapper Lil Nas X has opened up about how he "felt like an imposter" on tour and admitted he frequently told himself that performing to a live audience didn't "feel right".
In an upcoming documentary called Long Live Montero, the 25-year old Old Town Road hitmaker discusses homophobia and his experience of coming out while his country rap track was scaling the charts.
Speaking to the BBC, the singer, real name Montero Lamar Hill, admits as an artist who became famous from TikTok, he struggled to prepare for his 2022 tour.
"In rehearsal it didn't feel like the real thing yet. I felt like I was going out there and putting on my best impression of a person [on tour]," he says.
He revealed how he "felt like an imposter" as his loyal legion of adoring fans sang his lyrics back to to him.
"I'd [ask myself], 'What am I doing up here? This doesn't feel right'. It wasn't like talking to people online. There were actual human beings in front of me. It was weird."
In 2019, Old Town Road, which remains the longest-running number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for nineteen weeks, was excluded from the US country music charts.
Billboard stated it did not contain enough components of today's country music to be included.
Lil Nas X as they he is "happy" two black artists were recently recognised in the country charts - Beyoncé Texas Hold 'Em and Shaboozey's A Bar Song (Tipsy) - but wishes it could have happened for him.
"But I wish this would have happened for me. I wasn't even able to experience this," he adds.
Asked whether it has inspired him to revisit the genre, Lil Nas X says he's been "trying out some country [sounds] here and there over the last couple of years".
"I want to feel connected to it and not force it," he adds.
