The trailer and release date for Netflix's new Ireland-filmed TV series Bodkin have been unveiled, showcasing stunning locations and a host of Irish talent.

The dark comedy, the first scripted TV series from Barack and Michelle Obama's Higher Ground production company, was filmed in West Cork, Wicklow and Dublin and will drop on the streaming service on Thursday, 9 May.

The series, which consists of seven one-hour-long episodes, is about a motley crew of podcasters (Will Forte, Siobhán Cullen, Robyn Cara) who set out to investigate the mysterious disappearance of three strangers in a coastal Irish town.

Once they start unravelling the mystery, they discover a story much bigger and weirder than they could ever have imagined.

As they try to discern fact from fiction - about the case, about their colleagues, and, most painfully, themselves - the series challenges our perception of truth and exposes the stories we tell ourselves to justify our beliefs or validate our fears.

Alongside leading cast members Forte, Cullen and Cara, Bodkin also features The Young Offenders' Chris Walley and Intermission actor David Wilmot, as well as guest stars Fionnula Flanagan, Charlie Kemp, Pat Shortt, Pauline McLynn and Pom Boyd.

Bodkin's co-showrunner and executive producer Alex Metcalf said of shooting the project in Ireland: "The imaginary town of Bodkin is situated in West Cork, and it's a wild and fabulous landscape. Union Hall really appealed to us as a location and so did its connection to the ocean.

"The fact that there's a working harbour there, and it's incredibly beautiful. The locals in Union Hall have been incredibly welcoming and helpful, and receptive to our work in the town."

Creator and co-showrunner Jez Scharf also commended the incredibly talented local cast and crew, saying: "I think for me, one of the really exciting things is that we've gotten to utilise the talent in Ireland - and the level of that talent is unbelievable, across both cast and crew.

"What has personally been very exciting is getting to help showcase so much Irish talent, on screen and off."

Barack and Michelle Obama served as executive producers on the project alongside Tonia Davis, Nne Ebong, David Flynn and Paul Lee, while Nash Edgerton is lead director.

All seven episodes of Bodkin drop on Netflix on 9 May.
