Jack Black 'cannot wait to rock Dublin this summer'

Tenacious D star Jack Black says he "cannot wait to rock Dublin this summer".

The band, which comprises Black and bandmate Kyle Glass, will play Dublin’s 3Arena on 5 May.

"We got some big rocking surprises in store," he told RTÉ.ie Entertainment. "Looking forward to it – we’ve had some of the best shows of our lives there [in Ireland]. Looking forward to coming back.

"I’ll never forget when we opened for Metallica at Marlay Park – that was a night to remember!" he recalls, referencing the August 2008 gig.

Speaking ahead of the release of the fourth installment of the Kung Fu Panda series, in which he stars as lovable martial arts expert Po, the School of Rock star said that the franchise’s popularity with both critics and audience is down to its combination of kung fu, comedy and brilliant animation.

"I think people are drawn to a great kung fu action adventure, and if there’s comedy mixed in, and some great artwork, it’s kind of irresistible," he said.

Jack Black said of his upcoming 3Arena show: "We got some big rocking surprises in store"

Claiming that this edition is "one of my favourites" of the film series so far, he said, "I think the filmmakers did an incredible job.

"I knew it was good when we were recording but I had no idea it was going to be so great. I was kind of blown away to be honest with you."

Speaking of his respect for the huge team of animators behind the project, he said, "We’ve got the best in the world."

He also spoke about his own love of creating art. "I am a doodler and I actually did all of the artwork for the Tenacious D album, Post Apocalypto, which was a post-apocalyptic action adventure musical comedy," he said.

"I like to draw. We did it as a radio play first, the Post Apocalypto story, and then I would go and draw the pictures to go along with the audio of the radio play… I would draw all the characters, it was more like a slideshow.

"It’ll be available on our upcoming DVD, A Complete Masterworks: Part Three."

Saying he is not a "great artist," he added, "It looks kind of like Beavis and Butthead... you don’t have to be a great trained artist to draw something funny - that’s kind of my philosophy."

Kung Fu Panda 4 is in cinemas from 28 March.
