Described as a modern grunge-pop classic and a love letter to the greats of the Seattle music scene, the track is taken from her upcoming album Hellier, Forever, which is released on 17 May.

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

I am 23 years old, I am queer, and my favourite colour is lime green, because it's the colour of sunlight going through the leaves on a tree. It’s been my favourite colour since I was six years old.

How would you describe your music?

Growing up in Seattle really shaped my music and who I am. I would say my music is intense and jagged, like the cold clear water and Cascade mountains of the Pacific Northwest, and yet soft at the same time. I have a really forward voice, it’s loud, and I think that comes from growing up in the aftermath of the 90s grunge scene in Seattle (I was born in 2000). My songs are lyric driven. No matter what, I’m always ripping out my sternum and handing it to you in a song.

Who are your musical inspirations?

In high school, I listened to the two same car CDs every day: Heard It In a Past Life by Maggie Rogers, and The Lion and the Cobra by Sinéad O’Connor. Both of their voices, and their music, changed my life. My senior year of high school was also when I started working in a record store, Easy Street Records, where I discovered Phoebe Bridgers’ album Stranger in the Alps. That album also changed my life.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

The first gig I ever went to I don’t remember. My parents took me to see R.E.M. in a backpack as a baby. The first show I remember was the Killer’s on their Hot Fuss tour at the Paramount in Seattle. I was in kindergarten, and my aunt took me, my brother, and my cousin. We all fell asleep. My aunt woke us up for our favourite song, All These Things That I’ve Done. That’s probably my first concert memory.

What was the first record you ever bought?

A Little Bit Longer - the Jonas Brothers.

What’s your favourite song right now?

My favourite song right now is Subside by Noa Jamir. Noa’s one of my best friends, and also one of my favourite songwriters of all time.

Favourite lyric of all time?

"Weren’t we the stars in heaven?/Weren’t we the salt in the sea?" - Anything by Adrianne Lenker.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Probably Silk Chiffon by Muna. I listened to that song at least four times a day during the saddest six months of my life. And I still love it.

Where can people find your music/more information?

People can find my music on all streaming platforms, and learn more about me from my website. They can also follow me on social media, which is @miadaaay on every platform.
