Tell us three things about yourself . . .
My name is Calum and I’m originally from County Meath, I wrote my first song at the age of nine and since then have written songs but in English and as Gaeilge.
How would you describe your music?
I’d describe my music as soul-pop and R&B, but essentially for me it’s a catchy melody with a few lyrics that mean something special to me, and hopefully means something special to the person listening.
Who are your musical inspirations?
Lana Del Rey and Amy Winehouse are definitely my biggest inspirations lyrically and melodically. I also look up to other soul/R&B artists like Joy Crookes and Jorja Smith. The Ultraviolence album by Lana Del Rey quite literally changed my life and I wouldn’t be the songwriter I am today without it.
What was the first gig you ever went to?
My dad being an avid U2 Stan brought his 13-year-old son to his first concert in the 3Arena. I had to have been the youngest in the room and somehow got pushed to the barrier. If you look hard enough you’ll find a YouTube video of me fangirling during Elevation.
What was the first record you ever bought?
Billie Eilish’s EP Don’t Smile at Me. How I wish I could listen to the vinyl start to finish for the first time again; life-changing!
What’s your favourite song right now?
I can’t stop listening to Only When I by Alice Phoebe Lou.
Favourite lyric of all time?
One that’s stuck out to me over the years is Calling From Beyond The Grave I Just Wanna Say Hi Dad by Lana Del Rey: "Hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me to have". It’s so raw, so simple yet left me bawling for a few minutes after listening to it for the first time. Thanks, Lana.
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
West Coast by Ms. Del Rey herself, without a doubt. I don’t think I’ll ever get sick of that chorus base line. Thanks again, Lana!
