Tipperary duo The 2 Johnnies have released their new single, St Patrick Drove a Honda Civic. We asked Johnny B the BIG questions . . .
The track celebrates St. Patrick's Day this Sunday and is the first single taken from their new album.
The video for St. Patrick Drove A Honda Civic was filmed in Dolan’s, Limerick and on a closed set in Co. Clare with over 30 extras, a Honda Civic and St. Patrick himself.
Directed by Shane Seranno, the video sees the Tipperary twosome tell the lesser known but absolutely real story of how St Patrick was a lover of a chicken fillet roll and how he taught Larry Mullen Jr the drums. And, of course, he drove a Honda Civic.
During filming the Gardai were called twice following calls from concerned citizens that a crime was being committed.
According to the duo, St. Patrick is also a fan of doing doughnuts in his Honda Civic - so much so that Johnny Smacks pulled a muscle in his back during filming.
Speaking about making the video, Johnny Smacks says, "I was bet into the seat with my eyes closed the whole time, it was worse than the worst rollercoaster or the taxi home when you’ve the spinnies after a feed of sambuca!"
Johnny B adds, "I’ve always wanted a Honda Civic, when I was young all the cool lads had them. Bond might have had an Aston Martin, but we’ve got a Civic - just like St Patrick!"
The 2 Johnnies appear at: Live in London - Paddy’s Eve Party, EartH in Hackney, London on 16 March. Pints in A Field The 2 Johnnies plus Craig David, FIVE and more, Saturday 8 June - St. Anne’s Park, Dublin. Galway Summer Sessions, 17 August - Galway Airport. The 2 Johnnies All Ages Show, 1 September - TUS Gaelic Grounds Limerick.
Tell us three things about yourself . . .
I love my dog, Goujon, I used to have long hair and I am now a godfather.
How would you describe your music?
The soundtrack to an apprentice plumber’s commute to work. Every song is a hard shoulder, it’s very honest, it’s raw, the musicians who play on it are all insanely talented and we guarantee there’s nothing like it in Ireland right now. It’s about life in Ireland, shifting, heartbreak, GAA, spinning round town in Civics, fighting, and trying to grow up.
Who are your musical inspirations?
Richie Kavanagh, Saw Doctors, The Clancy Brothers, Marty Mone, Megadeth, Kerbdog. I think the new album is like Green Day meets the Saw Doctors to be honest.
What was the first gig you ever went to?
Slayer in The 3Arena. Johnny Smacks’ was Westlife.
What was the first record you ever bought?
Nirvana live album. Smacks’ was Craig David.
What’s your favourite song right now?
Luke Combs - Beer Never Broke My Heart.
Favourite lyric of all time?
Stevie Wonder - "Just because a record has a groove, don’t mean it’s in the groove."
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer or Hit The Diff by Marty Mone.
Where can people find your music/more information?
We’re The 2 Johnnies, we’re everywhere!!! The music videos for the songs are great. Give 'em a watch on YouTube.
