Davy Russell misses out on final as he leaves DWTS

Jockey Davy Russell and his pro-dancer partner Kylee Vincent have been eliminated from Dancing With The Stars.

Wild Youth singer David Whelan and his pro-partner Salome Chachua, Paralympian Jason Smyth and his pro partner Karen Byrne, Laura Fox and her pro-partner Denys Samson and Blu Hydrangea and their partner Simone Arena are now through to next week's final.

After his elimination, Russell said: "I have to thank my wife and all the lads at home and obviously the kids. It's just been fantastic. And Kylee, what can I say, she's a master of her trade!"

Speaking to RTÉ Entertainment after the show, Russell said he was not disappointed at having been eliminated.

"I'm feeling fantastic about all of this. To get past every step as we went along, it was a win for me. We got so far. It was fantastic experience. I've met some marvelous people, mainly this person here," he says, gesturing to Vincent. "She's been fantastic."

"I'm not disappointed - that's the thing. I'm delighted to be given the opportunity.

"To be honest, if I was gone in the first week, I would have been disappointed - anything after that to me, was a bonus."

Saying that taking part in the show was a "huge adrenaline rush", he described it as "just another level. And it was a fantastic insight into a different industry that I never even as much as wet my finger in."

When asked about who like to win the series, he said, "You couldn’t pick one over the other.

"Jason has his challenges, David Whelan has his challenges with his injury, Laura Fox and Blu - they all have their own challenges to overcome to be in the position they're in," he said.

"Who would I like to see win it? It’s a tough, tough one," he said. "I think for Jason to do what he has done is marvelous. Laura Fox really adores the show, she's all about the show - so it would mean an awful lot for her to win.

"But honestly whichever one of them wins, they will deserve it - I promise you that."

Sunday night’s DWTS was Fright Night and the show opened in spectacular style with the pro dancers dancing a Paso Doble to Run Boy Run by Woodkid with an extra special member in Austin McHale from McKinley School of Dance.

The first celebrity to take to the dancefloor was Wild Youth singer David Whelan and his pro-partner Salome Chachua. They danced a Salsa to Wrapped Up by Olly Murs.

Loraine Barry said: "You have raised the temperature along with the bar! What a salsa!"

Brian Redmond said: "The first performance in the semi-final, but I think with that you've probably got your place in the final wrapped up all ready."

David and Salome scored tens across the board and received 30 from the judges.

The second couple to perform were broadcaster Laura Fox and her pro-partner Denys Samson. Their American Smooth was danced to Monster Mash by Bobby Pickett.

Arthur Gourounlian said: "Those lifts, oh mon dieu! I loved everything, but most importantly I fell in love with a monster."

Loraine said: "You glided across beautifully...that lift with the twist and the drop, that's what you call a scary moment but well executed."

Laura and Denys scored 26 points from the judges.

Next up were Paralympian Jason Smyth and his pro partner Karen Byrne. Their Tango was performed to Disturbia by Rihanna.

Brian said: "Tango is a dance that's terrifyingly technical, devilishly difficult. But tonight, you made it look scarily simple."

Arthur said: "You work so, so hard to be here tonight and with this dance, you definitely prove that you deserve to be here tonight."

Jason and Karen scored 27 points from the judges.

Former jockey Davy Russell joined his pro partner Kylee Vincent in a Viennese Waltz. They danced to Never Tear Us Apart by INXS.

Loraine said: "That was a great Viennese Waltz. There was a darkness to it but you balanced it out with the lightness of the movement across the floor. It was so in character. Well done."

Brian said: "That’s the strongest I’ve seen you look all season."

Davy and Kylee scored 27 from the judges.

The final couple to perform were Drag Race star Blu Hydrangea and their partner Simone Arena. Their Charleston was danced to Witch Doctor by The Cartoons.

Arthur said: "You’ve given us an epic Charleston. Tonight, not only were you perfect but you were so much fun!"

Brian said: "I was totally in it. I think tonight...you’ve put a bit of a spell on me."

Blu and Simone scored 30 points from the judges.

The five couples then took part in a Scare-a-thon - a dance marathon where, for the first time, the semi-finalists took to the floor at the same time.

They battled it out to Dead Ringer for Love by Meat Loaf and Cher. Blu Hydrangea and Simone Arena were the last couple standing and earned an extra five points from the judges.

Fright Night also saw the return of last season’s DWTS runner-up, Brooke Scullion. Brooke, who represented Ireland in the Eurovision in 2022, exclusively performed her brand new single, Love Bomb.

The final of Dancing with the Stars is on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player next Sunday, 17 March at 7pm.
