International Women's Day is taking place on Friday 8 March and RTÉ Player has a spate of female-led and focused programming to enjoy.

The platform has 30 series featuring strong lead performances from female characters, mainly in the drama and comedy genres.

As well as this, a special International Women's Day section has been launched, featuring the best of documentaries exploring the lives of women.

Here's our pick of what you should check out....

1. Kin

Charlie Cox and Clare Dunne in RTÉ's Kin

Clare Dunne gives the epitome of a strong female lead performance in this gritty, Dublin-based crime drama. From starting off as a somewhat quashed wife figure in the series, she wheels and deals her way to calling the shots in the male-dominated Kinsella crime family.

There have been two seasons of the drama to date, with both available to view on RTÉ Player.

Happy Valley

Sarah Lancashire stars as a no-nonsense police officer in Happy Valley

All three seasons of this British crime drama series can be viewed on RTÉ Player.

The BBC show won the BAFTA award for best drama series in 2015, and became must-watch Sunday night viewing for many over the course of its three seasons.

Featuring Sarah Lancashire as hard-nosed Sergeant Catherine Cawood, Happy Valley follows her as she grieves for her daughter while raising her grandson, and is pursued by her nemesis, the murderer, sex offender and escaped convict Tommy Lee Royce, played by James Norton.

Also delivering strong performances are Siobhan Finneran and our own Charlie Murphy.

The critically-acclaimed series drew to a close last year. Dark, edgy, and suspenseful.

Maeve Binchy - The Magic of the Ordinary

The late Maeve Binchy

Last year, on the tenth anniversary of the death of Dalkey-born author Maeve Binchy, came this documentary about one of Ireland's most impactful female writers.

The Magic of the Ordinary is a contemporary revisit of Binchy's work and an examination of her legacy both to journalism and fiction.

Featuring contributions from Binchy's own wide circle of friends, the programme documents her circuitous journey to fame and fortune.

Eve Polastri (Sandra Oh) plays an British intelligence investigator tasked with capturing psychopathic assassin Villanelle (Jodie Comer). As the chase develops, both become obsessed with each other.

The addictive cat and mouse drama made a huge splash when it launched in 2018 and all four seasons are there ready to binge on RTÉ Player.

The Change: Ireland's Menopause Story

Dr. Caoimhe Hartley

An issue that affects every woman in the world is at the heart of this documentary.

Liveline's coverage of menopause in 2021, which delved into how menopause is dealt with both medically and socially in Ireland, caused waves, leading to this documentary airing in November 2022.

It bills itself as an "informative, warm and engaging documentary that opens up this conversation further and looks to the future."

Women share their own experiences of menopause, with medical experts speaking about what treatments are available.
