Once upon a time, back in 2003, a young hopeful by the name of Simple Kid emerged with his first solo album, Simple Kid 1 in 2003, followed by a UK Top 40 hit, an appearances on Later . . . with Jools Holland, Glastonbury slots and touring.

In 2008, he released his less successful second album, Simple Kid 2

Secretly in 2018, he bought a guitar, a microphone and some speakers and started recording quietly in his loft. He didn't tell anyone, not even his family.

He started uploading songs to YouTube and eventually released 13 of these songs as an album called Simple Kid 3: Health & Amp; Safety in 2022.

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

I knew from a very young age that I was destined to be world famous. I'm not world famous. I carry some crushing disappointments in my life.

How would you describe your music?

The new batch of songs appears to be all about parenting, ageing, confronting limitations, finding solace in small moments. Beat-boppin’ stuff!

Who are your musical inspirations?

Anyone who tells their truth and doesn't care who knows it.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers at the Point Depot in Dublin. I only knew the hits but it was so odd seeing someone from tv in real life.

What was the first record you ever bought?

Slippery When Wet by Bon Jovi ...I don't want to talk about it.

What’s your favourite song right now?

I just walked through my kitchen and The Power of Love by Jennifer Rush was playing on the radio. I surprised myself (and my family) by REALLY enjoying it.

Favourite lyric of all time?

"He who isn't busy being born is busy dying" - Bob Dylan (middle class, middle aged white man chooses Bob Dylan shock!).

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Not sure if this idea works for me, but I recently enjoyed The Neverending Happening by Bill Fay.

Where can people find your music/more information?

Bandcamp or buy vinyl at the gigs.

Alan Corr
