Retired broadcaster Charlie Bird has revealed that his Motor Neuron Disease has "completely changed" his view on life and recommends that everyone should "Live every day as if it was your last".

The 74-year-old former RTÉ journalist was a guest on The Brendan O’Connor Show on RTÉ One on Saturday, where he spoke about his condition, his favourite songs and the people and things that inspire him.

"My view on life has completely changed," he told Brendan. "Live every day as if it was your last and always extend the hand of friendship. Every one of us will pass, so I want to extend the hand of friendship to anyone who is in a dark place."

He spoke frankly about the accumulative, debilitating effect that MND is having on him and many listeners texted in their support, some admitting that Charlie’s words had them in tears.

"I have a terminal illness and I know my death is just around the corner," he admitted. "I am not afraid of dying. I have had a great life.

"As RTE's chief news correspondent, I got to work on the biggest stories both at home and abroad. I feel very privileged that my career in journalism took me to all these places."

He also provided an update on his illness. Sadly, the news was not good as MND continues to compromise his mobility.

"My great group of friends give me joy," he said. "Unfortunately, I can't leave the house anymore and we're waiting for a wheelchair-friendly car now which Claire is picking up next week.

"The mobility in my legs went three weeks ago, and to be honest, it was the worst feeling not being able to walk anymore. Previous to that, I was able to get into our car, but that is not possible anymore."

Undaunted, Charlie told Brendan about the immediate target for him and his wife Claire.

'We love the pier in Dun Laoghaire," he said. "That is my goal for next week, to meet my friends and walk the pier. I love hearing the stories about what's going on in the news. I suppose you could say to hear all the gossip.'

Charlie’s dog Tiger also got a special mention. AS every dog owner knows, they’re great companions, and Charlie admitted: "I would be lost without him. His love is unconditional whenever he sees me.

"He is so happy to see me," Charlie added. "He sleeps in our bed and there is nothing nicer than the warmth of your dog lying beside you."
