Kevin McAleer has said he is the "opposite" of his famously tedious Derry Girls character Uncle Colm.

The actor and comedian, who recently announced his plans to retire from stand-up after 40 years, appeared on Friday night's Late Late Show where he discussed his much-loved character on the Channel 4 comedy.

He told host Patrick Kielty of his on-screen counterpart: "Well, Uncle Colm is a very boring sort of long winded guy who leaves a lot of pauses and takes a long time to say the most basic kind of sentence, and obviously I'm the opposite of that.

"It's a tribute to my acting skills that I can inhabit that space and pull it off," he deadpanned.

The 67-year-old comic also spoke about starring alongside Tommy Tiernan and Ardal O'Hanlon on the show.

"The craic was 90," he shared. "There's a lot of hanging around involved in making stuff like that. It's a lot of chatting between scenes and Tommy and Ardal were great talking about all the box-sets they'd watched and books they'd read, it was like a culture show.

"And I don't watch anything or haven't seen anything or read anything, you know," he joked. "And then Ardal had done his thing and he went home and then it was just me and Tommy hanging around. And Tommy said to me, what are you reading at the moment?

"And I said, I'm not reading anything. And that was the end of the craic, you know."

McAleer also spoke about his comedy farewell gigs, in which he'll try and cram his best moments from his extensive career into 90 minutes.

"I thought about slipping away quietly and just keeping it to myself, that's what my negative voices would want me to do, but then my positive voices said go to hell! So I decided to make an occasion of it and an event and a celebration. I'm going out with a flourish," he said.

He agreed that it is a relief that he's decided to retire, telling Kielty: "It is actually a relief, not to have that pressure all the time to be to be funny. And it's a great weight off my shoulders, not to have to be funny in any situation, or entertaining, or even interesting."

McAleer will take to the stage at Vicar Street in Dublin on 11 April and Belfast's Mandela Hall on 21 April.

The Late Late Show, Friday nights at 9.35pm on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player.
