Gavin & Stacey star and co-writer Ruth Jones has rubbished recent rumours that there will be a Gavin & Stacey revival.

US outlet Deadline has reported that the BBC sitcom is set to film a new episode over the summer with the plan to air it at Christmas, five years on from the last special.

But Ruth Jones - who created the show along with James Corden and starred as Nessa - was on the Oliver Callan Show on RTÉ Radio One this Wednesday morning and was asked to address the rumour.

Oliver Callan said to her: "I have to ask you about 'the thing'. I wasn’t planning on boring you with the Gavin & Stacey [thing], but then the ‘thing’ happened, and it’s everywhere."

"I just find it so hilarious," she replied. "Apparently there’s a bidding war going on between the BBC and Netflix. And I love it as it has ‘a source says’. You know, who is this source?" Laughing, she added: "Where does this stuff come from?

"James and I went for lunch – when he back from America – and we got papped, and the next thing was ‘Oh, they must be doing more Gavin & Stacey!’

"Which is lovely! It’s lovely that people love it and they’re so desperate for it. Imagine if it was the opposite and they were like, ‘Oh god! They’re not bringing that back?’

"So it’s suddenly a rumour. I don’t know what to say. All I can says is, if there was something to say, on that front, James and I would happily announce it. We would. But some random journalist, who’s decided to write this story . . . I’m lost for words.

Jones also suggested that people should contact former Gavin & Stacey cast member’s representatives. "Ring up their agents! Ask the agents! It’s hilarious. I dunno, I just have to smile and go, okay, this is the world in which we live.

"You have one little story, and everyone writes about a rumour – and next thing it explodes."

Jones is currently in Dublin, playing Mother Superior in the musical version of Sister Act at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre. Last night was the opening night.

"It was full, and then everybody stood up at the end," she recalled. "It was like this massive standing ovation.

"It’s such a brilliant show. It’s so uplifting," she added. "The cast are phenomenal. They are so talented. The songs are brilliant and I just think – in this day and age, with all the rubbish going on in the world – it's a bit of musical theatre, fantastic, anyway, but this show will just lift your soul. Singing along and dancing at the end. It’s gorgeous.

"It’s hugely cheerful and I never thought I’d do a musical. I used to go and watch them. And I used to do them in school. Me and Rob Brydon used to be in musicals together, because we went to the same school. We were in Carousel, we were in Guys and Dolls.

"So I always loved them, but I’d never done on professionally. And it was never on the cards. I’m not a singer – I can hold a tune, but that’s about it. And I’m certainly not a dancer . . . But I do love being on stage."
