Domhnall Gleeson talks romance and first dates on Late Late Show

Domhnall Gleeson appeared on Friday night's Valentine's Day special Late Late Show where he spoke about his awkward first date and whether or not he's a romantic.

As he joined host Patrick Kielty, the Dublin actor joked: "I did not know that this was a Valentine's Day special. I would not have agreed to come on had I known that!"

An undeterred Kielty opened the interview by asking the 40-year-old Hollywood star, famed for his roles in the Harry Potter and Star Wars franchises: "I'm assuming you're a romantic man?"

"What are you basing that on?" Gleeson laughed.

"That little twinkle in the eye," Kielty suggested.

"This got weird, real early!" Gleeson joked, before continuing: "I think so. It's important to let the people you love know that you love them."

The actor, who was appearing on the show to promote his new Channel 4 series Alice & Jack, also described his very first date when he brought a girl to the cinema, only to be faced with his father, actor Brendan Gleeson, on the big screen.

"That was strange. It was like my first date. I was too young to buy the ticket and I was very nervous about getting in. The amazing girl that I was with had to buy the tickets for both of us, which is not a good look!" Gleeson recalled.

"And then I bought way too many sweets and I was really nervous. And then one of the trailers was for a film my dad was in and I remember seeing his big face looking down at me and feeling so terribly judged. Like it was absolutely awful."

Gleeson also spoke about starring as General Armitage Hux in the Star Wars sequel trilogy.

"That was really intense, that was a very full-on experience," he shared. "It changed things for a while, in terms of what it's like to walk down the street and I wasn't ready for that.

"Careers ebb and flow, things get really manic for a while and then can ease off and you can feel a little bit more like a real person.

"I'm just trying to enjoy whatever part of that I'm in at the moment. But it matters to me that I've been a part of good things, I'm very proud of that. The aim is to not let that slip away."

Last year, the actor was nominated for a Golden Globe award for his role in the psychological thriller limited series The Patient, while his father Brendan was previously nominated for The Banshees of Inisherin.

Speaking about being recognised for awards, Gleeson said: "The truth is, everything that's amazing about my dad I knew before he was nominated for any awards. And the same is true for my mam, and my three brothers, and everybody that I love.

"You don't need awards to know how special a person is. But it's cool when someone gets the nod."

The Late Late Show, Friday nights at 9.35pm on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player.
