Noah Kahan on why he took his mother to the Grammys

Noah Kahan has revealed that he promised his mother Lauri he would take her to the Grammys when he was only 13 years old and finally got to make her wish come true at last week's ceremony in LA.

The US singer, who has spent six weeks at No 1 in Ireland with his breakout hit Stick Season, played the 3Arena in Dublin on Thursday night and appeared on Friday night’s Late Late Show.

Speaking to host Patrick Kielty, the 27-year-old Vermont musician said, "My mom was my date at the Grammys, she RSVPed 15 years ago, a little too early for my liking, but she made me promise to bring her when I was 13 and I had to hold my part of the deal.

"I was happy to have her out there and she is just my rock and brings me back to earth. A lot of other artists took their moms too but they didn’t mark it as much as I did. She stole the show."

On the night Kahan got to hang out with fellow musicians, including Ed Sheeran. "Who I love, he has inspired me for my whole career," he said.

"That was really cool. My mom is the biggest Brandi Carlile fan and we were right next to her at the next table.

"My mom and Brandi were hanging out and I was sitting there on my own thinking, `man, I'm a complete loser,’ ripping the logo off my beer bottle."

Speaking about Stick Season, which has been streamed over a billion times, he said, "I forgot it was No 1 here in Ireland until last night. The record label said "it’s till No 1!" and I was like, 'oh sweet!’

"I’ve seen videos of people in pubs and everyone’s singing it and drinking. It looks like a scene from a movie, it’s really fun. I don’t know why I wasn’t invited. I wrote the song, the least you could do is invite me over to the pub. Come on, guys. Hahaha."

Reflecting on his show in Dublin on Thursday night, Kahan said, "It’s so cool to be all the way out here in Ireland and have people singing about Vermont, it’s so cool and very special to me."

During the show, Kahan invited Dermot Kennedy up on stage. "Dermot is from the area, and is just an amazing, amazing artist," he said.

"It’s the second time I’ve sung with him and every time I can’t believe I have to sing after him. He’s just an awesome vocalist and a great guy."

Kahan has also worked with Hozier recently. "That was a dream come true. I’ve been a fan of Hozier since 2013. Every time I sit down with my guitar or at my piano, I’m thinking about Hozier and what he would do.

"He’s just one of those artists who inspires the process so getting to do a song with him is a real full circle moment and it makes all the moments I’ve worked hard make sense and feel justified."

He added, "He’s also 6’7" and having someone who is 6’7" in my circle is huge, in terms of picking a basketball team. He’s an amazing guy, and he’s nice as he seems. I’ve really had a lot of luck with all these collaborators who have been so kind and I want to reciprocate that."
