Art’s Wildest Movement: Mannerism, 8.00pm, Sky Arts
Streaming on NOW
Here's the sort of series I always promise to watch but never get around to viewing. Maybe this time, eh?
Art critic Waldemar Januszczak presents a three-part look at the art movement, sandwiched between two clear propositions of the Renaissance and Baroque age, that dared to break all the rules – Mannerism.
Throwing everything that came before it to the wind, the human imagination was allowed to run wild, resulting in the stretched figures seen in Parmigianino’s The Madonna with a Long Neck and the mad colour palette of Pontormo.
For many, it represents a brief interlude in the 16th century where art was actually allowed to be exciting.
