Cillian Murphy, Poor Things among Oscar nominees

Cillian Murphy has been nominated for the Oscar for Best Actor for his performance in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, with the Irish production Poor Things receiving 11 nominations - a record for an Irish film.

Oppenheimer leads this year's Academy Award nominees with 13 nominations.

Murphy, a first-time Oscar nominee, faces competition from Bradley Cooper (Maestro), Colman Domingo (Rustin), Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers) and Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction).

Speaking to US entertainment publication Deadline after his nomination, Murphy said from his parents' home in Cork: "I feel really privileged and I feel really lucky to be in a film that's connected with people in a way that it has critically and commercially. To be in a film that people have seen three and four and five times and they come up to you and tell you that..."

"I'm like 48 and I've seen a lot and been doing it for 28 years now, so I think I can understand how significant it is to me and how meaningful it is to me and to other people," the Cork actor added.

"You know, it's been a long time in the business. I think as a youngster it just didn't seem a possibility anything like this."

Poor Things, produced by Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe of Dublin-based Element Pictures, along with director Yorgos Lanthimos and star Emma Stone, has received nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Cinematography for Dubliner Robbie Ryan.

As producers of the film, Guiney, Lowe, Lanthimos and Stone are all Best Picture nominees.

Guiney and Lowe described themselves as "thrilled" with Poor Things' 11 Oscar nominations, which they hailed as a record number for an Irish-produced film.

In a statement, the producers said: "This is a phenomenal achievement for Yorgos, Emma and our incredible cast and crew of the film, including of course Irish cinematographer Robbie Ryan.

"It's also a huge tribute to all of the Element Pictures team in Dublin, Belfast and London who have been across every detail of this production from its inception to its worldwide release. We are also very grateful to the amazing team at Film4 and to our brilliant distributors Searchlight."

There was disappointment for Murphy's fellow Irish stars Barry Keoghan (Saltburn) and Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott (both All of Us Strangers) in the acting categories.

The Academy Awards take place on Sunday 10 March at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
