Behind the music - Canned Pineapple

Canned Pineapple

Up and coming Brighton-based scuzz-pop five-piece Canned Pineapple, who are led by Cork man Seán Drury, have released their new single, Bowie. We asked Seán the BIG questions . . .

Seán has previously released songs with Rasputin's Boots and gigged with the Cardinals and The Love Buzz.

Talking about the new track, a tongue-in-cheek ode to David Bowie, he says, "Bowie marks the transition between old and new gearing the audience up for the next era of Canned Pineapple.

"Bowie is a reflection upon the last time I ever got my haircut in a barbers. When the barber's blade touched my head, the news came that David Bowie had passed to the other side, sending me into a deep dark despair.

"This track is a first-person perspective on this unique adventure."

Canned Pineapple play 25 January: Rochestown Park Hotel, Cork. 6-10th March: New Colossus, New York.

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

I grew up in Cork City. I am barred from Leisureplex, FOR LIFE! I was born with webbed feet.

How would you describe your music?

It's all about love, it’s very positive music or rather humorous music. Music has definitely been an escape; I explore my methods of escapism throughout all of the songs. I think you can really feel that live. Playing the music live for me is like reliving all the pain but being able to not only process it, but to use it to uplift those around me. I suppose I also uplift myself, it’s music to enjoy, not much thought but strong principles.

Who are your musical inspirations?

Musical inspiration is so broad for me now, I mean everything I do is music related. Every day I try to find new inspiration, I find myself getting really bored otherwise. At the moment I’m really loving the Hyper-Pop and Drill stuff but also love all the hip rock music coming out like the new Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard stuff and The Last Dinner Party. Obviously, me and all the lads love The Beatles etc.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

As far as I remember, the first gig I ever went to was Crojayn in An Spailpín Fánach with my dad, I don’t remember how old I was or how I felt about the gig, but it was the first rock `n’ roll show I ever got to see. The majority of my experience with live music up to that point was albums like Live and Dangerous by Thin Lizzy and Rock and Roll Animal by Lou Reed. Seeing a real live show with real people awoke a certain desire in me to do it and I’ve been trying really hard to do it ever since. I spent the next period of my life at every gig I could get to. That magic has worn away in recent years because eventually I think you become so critical it’s hard to enjoy it, so I look back on this feeling very often as it keeps me positive. I love live music in a different way now, I love watching myself from the past dancing up the front.

What was the first record you ever bought?

Axis Bold As Love by Jimi Hendrix. in Bunker Vinyl, I owe a great deal to John Dwyer the one-man army behind Cork’s best local record shop. This year, I finally got to give him some of our own records to shift. Hometown hero for sure, you could sort your life out get an odd job and a packet of crisps all with your fresh find.

What’s your favourite song right now?

That’s a really difficult one, it’d have to be between On Your Side by The Last Dinner Party or I Want To Be You by Lime Garden. I moved to Brighton a couple of years ago, Lime Garden are one of my favourite local bands. The stuff from their new record is hit after hit for me. Brighton’s got loads of hip bands.

Favourite lyric of all time?

"I wanna rock and roll all night and party every day." - KIss.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Trains Across The Sea - Silver Jews, anything by David Berman really but if I had to pick one it’d probably be that one.
