A biopic of Red Hot Chili Peppers' singer Anthony Kiedis based on his memoir Scar Tissue is reported to be in the works.

US movie site Deadline has reported that Universal Pictures is currently developing the movie and that it will be produced by Kiedis, Brian Grazer (who produced Apollo 13 and A Beautiful Mind) and RHCP manager Guy Oseary.

Deadline says the biopic will be a candid look at Kiedis as "an artist, addict and ringleader".

It will also cover the star’s unconventional father-and-son relationship as he grew up in the decadent LA music scene of the '70s and ’80s.

Kiedis (61) was born in Grand Rapids, MI, and moved to Los Angeles aged 12, and co-founded Red Hot Chili Peppers with late guitarist Hillel Slovak, bassist Flea (Michael Balzary) and drummer Jack Irons in 1983.

The band fused funk, punk and rock and went on to have nine US Top 10 albums, 15 No. 1 Modern Rock singles and win six Grammys.

Frequent visitors to Ireland, the band headlined Slane Castle in August 23, 2003, having previously performed there in August 2001 opening for U2. They last played Ireland in 2022 with a gig at Dublin's Marlay Park, where Kiedis told the audience that the band were "155%" Irish.

Kiedis has been open about his addictions and regrets. Speaking to The Sun in 2016 about his book, Scar Tissue, he said: "I did regret the book for a while as there was some pain caused.

"But then, I started seeing the long-term positive reverberating. People were reading it in hospitals, in prisons and schools and it was having a positive effect."

He added: "I realised that the whole point of writing that book wasn’t for me, but to show that somebody can go all the way down and come all the way back and have a productive, successful happy interesting life.

"And so whatever shame, pain or difficulty or discomfort I went through, then it was worth it because I get so many people coming up to me saying their kids had read it and got their act together because of it."

Red Hot Chili Peppers released two albums in 2022, both featuring the return of guitarist John Frusciante.
