The Tánaiste Micheál Martin was among those paying tribute to Cork actor Cillian Murphy following his Golden Globe best actor win for his leading role in Christopher Nolan's historical epic Oppenheimer.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, Mr Martin said it was a "richly deserved award for a supremely talented actor".

In a spectacular turnout for homegrown talent, Irish actors represented half of the six nominees for Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama at this year's ceremony, with Barry Keoghan (Saltburn) and Andrew Scott (All of Us Strangers) nominated alongside Murphy.

Mr Martin added: "A superb performance by Cillian in a year of some incredible Irish screen performances."

The Lord Mayor of Cork, Councillor Kieran McCarthy, also offered his "major congratulations" to the Douglas-born actor.

He wrote on X: "Such a talented actor but also such a hard grafter across your career from community theatre to Hollywood movies, a v well deserved award; enjoy the awards season; v best wishes from all in Cork."

The official X page for Murphy's BBC period drama Peaky Blinders paid tribute to their leading star, saying his performance as the "father of the atomic bomb" J. Robert Oppenheimer was "magnificent".

Meanwhile, Screen Ireland congratulated Murphy on the win and his "extraordinary" turn in Oppenheimer.
