Backstreet Boys singer Nick Carter has spoken publicly for the first time since the sudden death of his sister Bobbie Jean, who died on 23 December at the age of 41.

Nick Carter, 43, posted a childhood photo of he and his sister on Instagram, and wrote to his two million followers, "It may take a lifetime to fully process the loss my family has endured over the years – most recently, with the sudden passing of our sister Bobbie Jean.

"I am completely heartbroken," he wrote.

He thanked fans for their "love and kind words" and finished the post by saying, "We are reminded again that life is precious, fleeting and to cherish the time we have with the ones we love.

"I know she is finally at peace with God. I love you BJ."

The cause of her death is still unknown.

Three of the five Carter siblings have died. Bobbie Jean's passing came just over a year after the death of former teen pop star Aaron Carter, who accidently drowned while under the influence of drugs. He was 34.
