Coronation Street star Bill Roache is to mark his 64th year on the soap after signing a contract for an additional year, according to The Sun.

The 91-year-old sntar, who plays Ken Barlow, has been a stalwart on the soap since it first aired in December 1960.

Roache previously told The Mirror newspaper that he hopes to still be on the soap when he is 100.

In 2020, just before the credits rolled on Corrie's 10,000th episode, millions of shocked viewers watched as Ken said he was leaving the cobbles.

But fans were relieved that he was just moving away with his girlfriend Claudia Colby to a nearby retirement complex.

The only time since 1960 when he was not actively involved in the soap was during the Covid-19 epidemic where measures were taken to cocoon older members of the cast.

ITV Director of Television Kevin Lygo said at the time: "Some people who are in a dangerous zone, by age or health reasons, they won't be there, I'm sure, for a time," he explained.

"I don't want Ken Barlow to get sick on my watch.

"We will be very careful and mindful about that sort of thing."

The Guinness World Records named Roache as the longest-serving male television star in a continuous role.
