As the 20th Century saw cinema grow from out of the nickelodeons and into a global culture, the world fell into years of international war.
Ian Nathan examines how cinema depicted the conflict, both as it happened and in retrospect in the years that followed.
We see how the first world war was dramatised in 1930’s All Quiet on the Western Front (above), and how cinema was used as propaganda during World War II in films such as 1941’s 49th Parallel, before the likes of Against the Wind (1948) and Odette (1950) told stories of espionage, sabotage and resistance after WWII had ended.

To help, the larder is packed with fresh seafood, tropical fruits and summer vegetables. The chefs will need to demonstrate an inventive streak - and the technical skill to back it up.
The next round sees each given 75 minutes to cook a two-course menu for three of the country's most revered food critics, with the three who impress the most earning their place in Knockout Week.
