Emma Stone stars in Poor Things, the Oscar-tipped new film from Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos and Irish company Element Pictures, which receives its Irish premiere on the opening night of the Cork International Film Festival at the Cork Opera House this Thursday.
Already a winner at the Venice Film Festival, Poor Things reunites Element Pictures' Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe with Stone and Lanthimos after their success with 2018's The Favourite.

All four are producers on Poor Things.
Poor Things tells "the incredible tale and fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe)".

"Under Baxter's protection, Bella is eager to learn," the synopsis continues.

"Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents.

"Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation."

The Oscar nominations take place on Tuesday 23 January 2024.
