Tell us three things about yourself . . .

I create and design all my own music videos, visuals and artwork. People often wrongly think that I'm German. I also play in a dance rock band from Dublin called Freak Control.

How would you describe your music?

A cinematic blend of dark Indie and electronic with real and honest lyrics.

Who are your musical inspirations?

Wire, Boards of Canada, Lush, Bowie, The Cure, Massive attack, Roy Orbison, Cocteau Twins etc. If the music is off centre, has a dark side and has great melodies I'll probably like it.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

First proper gig where I bought a ticket was probably Interpol in The Village Dublin (now Opium). They were supported by Franz Ferdinand!

What was the first record you ever bought?

Radiohead - Kid A. I was actually in Canada the week this came out, the album became this surreal soundtrack to driving for hours through the uninhabited Canadian wilderness in autumn, it was so strange and hypnotic, as if you could switch off the voice in your head and go back to some serene state beyond consciousness. That album will always be special to me.

What's your favourite song right now?

Talk Talk - I Believe in You. A friend recommended the Spirit of Eden album to me recently, I was never a fan of Talk Talk before (whhhhhaaat??! - Ed) but this album just blew me away. It sounds completely `now’ to me. It's like the musical equivalent of getting lost on the way home in pitch darkness and having this beautiful moment of solitary clarity where you know exactly what you need to do in life to get out of a rut and you realise the stuff you were worrying about is actually irrelevant.

Favourite lyric of all time?

"The man at the back has a question, His tongue's involved with solutions, But the monkey on my back, Won't stop laughing." Echo and the Bunnymen (Over The Wall).

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Probably Outdoor Miner by Wire. So beautiful with an almost Beatles level of songwriting melodic class.

Where can people find your music/more information?

I’m pretty easy to find on most platforms if you search for @PaulChaneyMusic but I’m most regularly on Instagram. All my links are here.
