From animated films for the little ones to flicks from the 80s and 90s with a mega nostalgia factor, we've got the whole family covered this Halloween.

No one wants their children sleeping in mum and dad's bed, or waking up after a nightmare, so what do you do when they decide they want to watch a spooky movie this Halloween?

If they insist on watching a 'scary' movie, consider letting them control the environment - are the lights on or off, how loud is the volume and what pillow they should use if there is a particular part they don't want to watch.

Parents then get to decide how 'scary' the movie actually is. To help we've rounded up a list of suggestions with something for toddlers, tweens and beyond. Get the popcorn and toffee apples ready!

Hocus Pocus (1993) Rating PG
Halloween just wouldn't be the same without an annual viewing of this cult classic. Originally planned as a straight-to-TV project titled Disney's Haunted House, the horror-comedy centres on three witches who are resurrected in Salem, Massachusetts on Halloween night. Their mission: to steal as many kids as possible. A spooktacular movie for all the family, that won't have you looking underneath your bed in fear of the Boogeyman.

Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween (2018) Rating PG
Two youngsters unwittingly unleash all manner of monsters from a locked manuscript they find in an abandoned house. The two youngsters in question are Sonny (Jeremy Ray Taylor) and Sam (Caleel Harris) and they are attempting to start a garbage cleanup business. They are called after school to clean up an abandoned house. Inside, they find a locked manuscript and open it, causing Slappy the Dummy to appear. They unknowingly bring him to life by speaking magic words found in his pocket...

Casper (1995) Rating: 12A
Casper tells the story of a young girl who befriends a ghost. Dr. James Harvey (Bill Pullman), a ghost therapist, has been hired by the greedy owner of Whipstaff Manor to exorcise the house of its spirits, including the friendly, but lonely, Casper (voice of Malachi Pearson) and his crazy uncles Stretch (Joe Nipote), Stinkie (Joe Alaskey) and Fatso (Brad Garrett). While James' daughter Kat (Christina Ricci) forms a friendship with Casper his three uncles create havoc as they do everything in their power to prevent their eviction.

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) Rating PG
Bored with doing the same thing every year for Halloween, Pumpkin King Jack Skellington longs to spread the joy of Christmas. He is so taken with the idea of Christmas that he tries to get the resident bats, ghouls, and goblins of Halloween Town to help him put on Christmas instead of Halloween - but his merry mission puts Santa in jeopardy and creates a nightmare for boys and girls everywhere.

Ghostbusters (1984) Rating: 12
Who you gonna call? Apparently, four paunchy, middle-aged scientists, as Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson team up to fight ghosts and hold off the apocalypse in this 1984 comedy classic. Watch out for Slimer!

Monsters, Inc. (2001) Rating: G
When a little girl named Boo (Mary Gibbs) wanders into their world, it's the monsters who are scared silly. It's up to Sulley (John Goodman) and Mike (Billy Crystal), the top scare team, to keep her out of sight and get her back home before the villains find out what's happened.

Hotel Transylvania (2012) Rating PG
Hotel Transylvania is Dracula's lavish five-stake resort, where monsters and their families can live it up and no humans are allowed. One special weekend, Dracula (Adam Sandler) has invited all his best friends – Frankenstein and his wife, the Mummy, the Invisible Man, the Werewolf family, and more – to celebrate his beloved daughter Mavis’s (Selena Gomez) 118th birthday. For Dracula catering to all of these legendary monsters is no problem but the party really starts when one ordinary guy stumbles into the hotel and changes everything!

The Witches (1990) Rating: 12
This Roald Dahl classis tells the story of a recently orphaned young boy called Luke (Jasen Fisher) who is taken to a seaside hotel in England by his grandmother, who is recuperating after an illness. Also staying at their hotel is a group of witches who have gathered to prepare a plot to rid England of all children. The witches are ruled by the vicious and powerful Grand High Witch (Anglica Houston)... can Luke stop her devious plan?

Coraline (2009) Rating PG
Coraline Jones (Dakota Fanning) is an 11-year-old girl who is feisty, curious, and adventurous beyond her years. She and her parents have just relocated from Michigan to Oregon. Missing her friends and finding her parents to be distracted by their work, Coraline tries to find some excitement in her new environment... with sinister consequences.

Coco (2018) Rating PG
Coco may not be Halloween film per say, but it does take place in the Land of the Dead on the Day of the Dead, which is pretty close. This intricately detailed, highly imaginative and endlessly enthralling film manages to achieve the seemingly impossible – to make a joyous and hopeful film that has death as a central theme. The Pixar film follows Miguel (Anthony Gonzalez), who dreams of becoming a successful artist despite his family's ban on music. In order to prove his talent, Miguel stumbles into the Land of the Dead and meets a charming trickster named Héctor, and they embark on a journey to learn all about Miguel’s family history.

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) Rating: G
E.T. might be a gentle alien, but he's an alien nonetheless, which can be a little spooky. He is found and befriended by a 10-year-old boy named Elliott (Henry Thomas) who brings him into his suburban California house. Elliott introduces E.T., as he is dubbed, to his brother, Michael (Robert MacNaughton), and sister, Gertie (Drew Barrymore), and they decide to keep his existence a secret., but when he falls ill, the government must intervene.
