Daniel O'Donnell reads Patrick Kielty the riot act during Late Late Show opening

Daniel O'Donnell put Patrick Kielty in his place during the opening skit of the Late Late Show on Friday on RTÉ One and the RTÉ Player.

The show began with Kielty emerging from a coffin as part of the Halloween fun.

"It's the scariest weekend of the year, and tonight we've an amazing show coming your way, including something that is truly terrifying, folks," he teased.

Donning a Daniel O'Donnell mask, Kielty continued: "Later tonight, this man is going to be singing live in the studio."

Cue an unimpressed Daniel O'Donnell appearing behind the presenter.

"Did you say that my music was scarier than Halloween?" he asked.

"No, no, no, I, I..." Kielty scrambled.

"Your mother will be ashamed of you!" scolded O'Donnell.

"I was just saying how frighteningly good your music was, Daniel," offered Kielty.

"That's the intro," said O'Donnell as he handed Kielty a new cue card.

"So sorry, so sorry," said Kielty.

"Get it right!" said O'Donnell.

"Sorry Daniel, sorry Mum," said Kielty.

Kielty recommenced: "Our first guest is the biggest star we've ever had on the show. He's the greatest singer this island has ever produced."

Throwing away the cue card, Kielty continued: "Honestly, I don't need any of this. My first guest has sold over 10 million albums worldwide in a career that has spanned an amazing 40 years.

"He is the only recording artist in the history of music to have an album in the UK charts for 35 years in a row.

"He has wowed audiences from New York to Nashville from Melbourne to Manchester, but his home will always be his Donegal shore. Please welcome... Daniel O'Donnell!"

As the interview began, Kielty offered O'Donnell some tea from fine bone China.

"I thought there was no money in RTÉ!" said O'Donnell as Kielty poured.

"There isn't after we pay for you tonight!" laughed Kielty.

There was more fun later when Kielty, dressed up as the Donegal icon, joined him for a duet on I Just Want to Dance with You.
