The official trailer for Maestro, a Netflix biopic about about famous US conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein, has been released.

American actor Bradley Cooper, 48, plays the lead role of Bernstein, as well as writing the screenplay and directing the film.

Carey Mulligan co-stars as Felicia Montealegre Bernstein, a Costa Rican-Chilean actress who was Bernstein's wife.

The film promises "a towering and fearless love story chronicling the lifelong relationship between Leonard and Felicia. A love letter to life and art, Maestro at its core is an emotionally epic portrayal of family and love."

Also starring are Matt Bomer, Maya Hawke and Sarah Silverman.

Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg are executive producers on the project.

Earlier this year, the film received criticism for the decision to have Cooper wear a large prosthetic nose, as some critics believed it played up to Jewish stereotypes.

In response to the criticism, the children of Bernstein defended Bradley Cooper's use of "make-up to amplify his resemblance" to the late composer in the upcoming film.

Bernstein, the son of Jewish-Ukrainian immigrants, died in 1990 but remains one of the best-known composers and conductors of all time.

He served as music director of the New York Philharmonic and wrote the Broadway musical West Side Story.
