Dublin-based artist and producer Evan Kennedy has released his new single, Pearphone. We asked him the BIG questions . . .
Evan has worked with Coolio, Tebi Rex, Versatile, Offica, and members of hip-hop group D12 and his new track is the follow-up to debut single, Francis.
Speaking about Pearphone, he says, "It plays on the feeling of being a kid and staying up all night texting 'til your phone dies, even though your family is giving out about you never looking up, but they wouldn't understand because you're infatuated with finally having a phone and your own friend group and love interests etc."
He adds, "I'm blessed to have worked with incredible artists in the past, but now I get to show you what I really sound like. It's a million miles away from what most people are expecting, but I like to keep it fresh, and it's where I'm at right now."
Tell us three things about yourself . . .
Gemini. Non-smoker. Avid iPod revivalist.
How would you describe your music?
A mixed bag of electronic, rock, and pop loose ends that has trouble finding a genre yet isn't wild enough to warrant any unclassifiable mystique. Catchy sometimes; often chronically sad.
Who are your musical inspirations?
Björk, Ye (FKA Kanye, specifically post-Yeezus), Bon Iver, Massive Attack… same as every other white guy with Ableton really.
What was the first gig you ever went to?
I’m not 100% sure ‘cause it’s all a bit hazy but I got dragged to Britney Spears in 2004 and it was just a bit disturbing really. Shout-out Britney though. Everytime is an untouchable masterpiece.
What was the first record you ever bought?
LimeWire aside, Meteora by Linken Park is the first one I handed my own money over the counter for. Probably directly led to the bleach blonde head on me now.
What’s your favourite song right now?
My Spotify on repeat top song has been Bad Influence by Omah Lay for about three years to the point where I think I’ve broken it and it’ll never come back down.
Favourite lyric of all time?
"Where’s your head at, where’s your head at" - Basement Jaxx. Look after your mental health.
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Achilles Last Stand by Led Zeppelin. I spent like three hours a day as a kid whacking away to it on the Guitar Hero drum kit, so I reckon it’d stand the test. Always Loved a Film by Underworld is also a close contender.
Where can people find your music/more information?
Instagram is @kevanennedy and that’s where the rants and doodles go (I’m allergic to twitter); I’m all over Spotify and YouTube for tunes. Check Adverts.ie as well cause I’m usually most active there looking for s*** I don’t need.
