Watch: Lady Gaga and Rolling Stones raise the roof in NYC

Two generations of music stars joined forces last night when Lady Gaga and The Rolling Stones gave a surprise performance in New York to celebrate the release of the band's new studio album Hackney Diamonds.

The band took over New York City club, Racket NYC, for the album launch party in front of an audience which included Jimmy Fallon, Trevor Noah, Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz, Mary Kate Olsen, Elvis Costello, and Chris Rock.

Lady Gaga joined Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood on stage to perform new single and album highlight Sweet Sounds of Heaven.

The Stones also performed seven songs from their new album - Angry, Whole Wide World, Tumbling Dice and Bite My Head Off - and hits Jumpin’ Jack Flash, Shattered and Tumbling Dice.

Hackney Diamonds is the veteran band’s first album of new material since 2005's A Bigger Bang.

Questlove of The Roots was on DJ duty at Racket NYC and Christie Brinkley, Ed Burns, Keegan-Michael Key, Minka Kelly, Christy Turlington, and Hackney Diamonds producer Andrew Watt were also in the audience.

Read our review of Hackney Diamonds: "A very fine record of ruined splendour and unholy riffage. Far from elegantly wasting away, the Stones are still cackling under the moonlight."

The Stones’ new 12-track album was recorded in various locations around the world and features late drummer Charlie Watts on two tracks, Mess It Up and Live By The Sword, which also features bass from former Stones bassist Bill Wyman.

As well as Gaga, the album also features guest appearances from the band’s old touring partner Stevie Wonder, Elton John, and Paul McCartney.
