Oscar-nominated American composer Dustin O'Halloran plays The Liberty Hall Theatre, Dublin on 16 October as part of the Between the Notes concert series. We asked him the BIG questions . . .
Tickets for the show, with support from violinist, harpist, and composer Margaret Hermant, are priced €33 and available here.
Presented by Pavilion Theatre, Dún Laoghaire, Between the Notes is a new concert series showcasing artists from around the world who are reshaping the boundaries of contemporary music, creating sonic landscapes to lose ourselves in, and exploring the powerful emotions that exist "between the notes".
O'Halloran is a pianist and composer who's had a lengthy career as a film and TV composer, is an acclaimed solo musician and is one half of the duo A Winged Victory for The Sullen.
His latest album Silfur was released with renowned classical musical label Deutsche Gramophone in 2021.
He's the winner of an Emmy for his main title theme to Amazon's comedy drama Transparent, and he was nominated for an Oscar, a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, and a Critic's Choice Award for his score for 2016's Lion - written in collaboration with Volker Bertelmann. More recently he co-composed The Essex Serpent with Herdis Stefansdottir and scored the ITVX mini-series A Spy Among Friends.
Looking forward to this next run of shows starting next weekend in Ireland, hope to see you there - https://t.co/DJGR8eUp2p

Tell us three things about yourself . . .
I'm an American composer living in Iceland, I have been making records under my own name since 2004. My other project is A Winged Victory For The Sullen with Adam Wiltzie. I also have done a lot of writing for film in the past years.
How would you describe your music?
Minimalistic, elements of classical and electronic , I use the piano mainly but also incorporate strings blended with electronics.
Who are your musical inspirations?
Debussy, Brian Eno, Bach, Arvo Part, Leonard Cohen, Kraftwerk, too many to mention really.
What was the first gig you ever went to?
According to my mother, she went to see Jethro Tull while she was pregnant, so technically, that might be considered my first gig.
What was the first record you ever bought?
Probably a John Williams soundtrack, but when I was a teenager and started getting deep into music it was a Cure album.
What’s your favourite song right now?
I really love this record from Floating Points and Pharaoh Sanders called Promises and its sort of one long piece in variations.
Favourite lyric of all time?
"And I don't believe in the existence of angels, But looking at you I wonder if that's true, But if I did I would summon them together, And ask them to watch over you." - Into My Arms by Nick Cave.
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Kind of Blue - Miles Davis or Chopin’s Nocturnes.
Where can people find your music/more information?
My website.
