Pick of the Day

Obituary, 10.15pm, RTÉ One

Streaming on RTÉ Player

Last week’s opening episode of this dramedy was really good and reminded me of quirky shows Bryan Fuller created over the years, such as Dead Like Me, Wonderfalls and Pushing Daisies.

And with Michael Smiley involved, it also gets me wondering: whatever happened to Dead Still?

Siobhan Cullen is deadpan, Wednesday Addams-style, here as Elvira, the obituary writer who decides to create work for herself by bumping off people.

With her next victim selected, Elvira finds herself distracted by anonymous poison-pen letters and sets off on a mission to find out who is sending them.

Through a series of twists and near misses, Elvira ends up finding a new victim, which brings her closer to Emerson, who it is revealed has come to Kilraven to solve the murder of a German woman there five years previously.

Don’t Miss

The Great British Bake Off, 8.00pm, Channel 4

Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding host as the bakers face the challenges set for them by judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith in biscuit week.

First, the contestants create some marshmallow-based childhood favourites in the Signature challenge before tackling a custard classic in the Technical.

In an illusion-themed Showstopper, the bakers must make their favourite meal out of biscuits.

Hacks, 10.30pm, TG4

The Jean Smart-starring dramedy continues.

Reeling from a surprise encounter with a group of former colleagues, Ava takes a chance on George, who promises a wildly different Vegas evening - and encourages her to take a bold leap of faith.

After a disagreement with Marcus over the future of her career, Deborah reveals her cards to Marty.

And don't forget to stay on TG4 afterwards, for the also excellent Minx.

New or Returning Shows

Partygate, 9.30pm, Channel 4

Based on the findings of the Sue Gray reports, here’s a tale that exemplifies Boris Johnson’s time as UK Prime Minister.

It’s a factual drama telling the story of the Covid-19 pandemic through the portal of what was happening inside 10 Downing Street including the lockdown-breaching parties.

Killer in My Village, 9.00pm, Sky Crime

Streaming on NOW

Back for a seventh season, it’s the series that sheds light on shocking crimes that have taken place in small towns and villages across Britain, from execution murders to crimes of passion.

First up is the tragic murder of 86-year-old Freda Walker.

Freda and her husband Ken took out a loan to carry out some home improvements. Little did they know they were being stalked by 34-year-old Vasile Culea - a gambling addict with thousands of pounds of debt.

Culea entered the Walkers’ home with the intent of robbing them, but in the struggle that followed, Freda was beaten and bound, and would later die from her injuries.

CCTV would capture Culea leaving the residence after the robbery, and police arrested him shortly afterwards - but for this small village the damage had been done.

Soham: Catching a Killer, 9pm, Virgin Media One

The brutal murders of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman by Ian Huntley (below) caused shockwaves in Britain, but even more horror awaited when police discovered who was responsible.

This two-part documentary details the harrowing events surrounding what has become commonly referred to in the UK as the Soham murders.

As well as the murders, it explores the aftermath and effects this horrific crime had on both the Wells and Chapman families and the wider population.

Storyville: If the Streets Were on Fire, 10.00pm, BBC Four

With knife violence rising in London, this documentary follows the BikeStormz, a new movement for youngsters across the city to express themselves beyond any threats of violence.

But as they come together across the capital on their bikes, doing wheelies, tricks and death-defying acrobatics, they are challenged with the threat of arrest by police and accusations of anti-social behaviour.

New to Stream

Make Me Scream, Prime Video

Isn't it gas that we exported Halloween to the USA and then replaced our traditional version with theirs?

This humorously horrifying Halloween special features three celebrity teams, led by Jaleel White (Family Matters), Shoniqua Shandai (Harlem), and rapper Lil Xan.

They face a series of bone-chilling scare zones while trying not to scream, in order to survive the night and take home the prestigious Medal of Mayhem.

Ending Today

Rise of the Nazis: The Manhunt, 9.00pm, BBC Two

The story of the diehards committed to hunt down thousands of Nazi war criminals, some of whom were living in plain sight concludes.

One such woman was German Beate Klarsfeld, determined to right the wrongs of her country's dark past and identify Nazis who had gone unpunished - including the notorious Klaus Barbie.

The documentary also tells the story of Josef Mengele - who performed gruesome experiments on Auschwitz inmates - and the son so appalled by his father's actions he considered turning him in.

Sport

Champions League Live, 7.30pm, RTÉ2

Streaming on RTÉ Player

Manchester United host Galatasaray (KO 8pm) as Joanne Cantwell presents all the action from the matchday two Group A match at Old Trafford.

The English club lost their opening match 4-3 away to group favourites Bayern Munich, but will hope to bounce back this evening in front of their own fans.

Last time out, the Turkish champions fought back from two goals down at home to FC Copenhagen to draw 2-2, but will do well to get anything like that result tonight.

With analysis from Kevin Doyle and Shay Given.
