Michael Caine brings all the feels in The Great Escaper clip

A new clip for The Great Escaper, the touching drama starring Michael Caine and the late Glenda Jackson, has been released ahead of the film's arrival in Irish cinemas next week.

Having last acted together in 1975's The Romantic Englishwoman, Caine and Jackson had just finished filming The Great Escaper when double Oscar winner Jackson passed away in June at the age of 87.

The new film, which is inspired by true events, is released in cinemas on Friday 6 October.

The synopsis of The Great Escaper reads: "In the summer of 2014, Bernard Jordan (Michael Caine) made global headlines. He had staged a 'great escape' from his care home to join fellow war veterans on a beach in Normandy, commemorating their fallen comrades at the D-Day Landings' 70th anniversary.

"It was a story that captured the imagination of the world as Bernie embodied the defiant, 'can-do' spirit of a generation that was fast disappearing. But, of course, it wasn't the whole story. It was an inspirational-but-sanitised retelling of one man's need to come to terms with the lasting trauma of war.

"Bernie's adventure, spanning a mere 48 hours, also marked the culmination of his 60-year marriage to Rene (Glenda Jackson) - The Great Escaper celebrates their enduring love but always with an eye to the lessons we might learn from the Greatest Generation."

Paying tribute to Glenda Jackson in June, Michael Caine said: "Glenda was one of our greatest movie actresses. It was a privilege to work with her on The Great Escaper recently, our second film together. It was as wonderful an experience this time as it was 50 years ago. I shall miss her."

Oliver Parker, the director of The Great Escaper, added: "It was the privilege of a lifetime to work with her. She had such fierce intelligence, such passion, and fearlessness."
