Melanie Blatt and her mother Helene compete in Celebrity Race Across the World

Celebrity Race Across the World begins, there's Celebrity Gogglebox Ireland, Jed Mercurio Remembers Cardiac Arrest, it's a big Champions League night, and Chris Packham wonders: Is It Time to Break the Law?

Pick of the Day

Celebrity Race Across the World, 9.00pm, BBC One

This celeb version of this series was postponed from last week.

Four famous faces are each partnered by a family member on a 10,000km race from Africa to the Arctic, ditching their luxury and learning to travel on a limited budget.

They will face the same hardships, twists and turns as contestants in the regular series, but will enjoy the same rewards that the thrill of the race has to offer.

The only support the celebrities will have is their travelling partner - in each case, a trusted family member.

Taking part are McFly drummer Harry Judd and his mother Emma, racing driver/pundit Billy Monger and his sister Bonny, All Saints singer Melanie Blatt and her mam Helene, while broadcaster Alex Beresford heads off with his dad Noel.

Don’t Miss

Cardiac Arrest, 10.15pm, BBC Four

Here's another chance to see the controversially cynical medical drama from the 1990s by Jed Mercurio (below), starring Andrew Lancel, Helen Baxendale and Pooky Quesnel.

In the first of six episodes tonight, traumatic start at the hospital leaves newly qualified Dr Collin in no doubt about his naivety in real-life situations, confirming fears that the years he spent in medical school have left him unprepared

Preceded at 10pm by Jed Mercurio Remembers - Cardiac Arrest, where the creator of the show, who later brought us Line of Duty and Bodyguard, looks back on the series that established him as a writer.

The Way We Were, 9.35pm, RTÉ One

Streaming on RTÉ Player

This week’s show offers a nostalgic look back at crime and punishment. Blimey!

From the chequered History of the Garda force to the shockingly late abolition of the death penalty to the criminalisation of children, to the changing face of the prison system.

There’s also a look at how the 20th Century brought us 'crime as entertainment’ as the tabloids whipped up fear and excitement around crime gang culture and the terrifying escalation of the drug wars in the 1980s.

The Newsreader, 10.25pm, RTÉ2

Streaming on RTÉ Player

As the second season of this Aussie period drama set in the 1980s continues, The News At Six team is rocked by a shocking, unprecedented event - a mass shooting in Clifton Hill.

It’s a huge story and activates everything that compels Helen (Anna Torv) about the job.

New or Returning Shows

Celebrity Gogglebox Ireland, 9.00pm, Virgin Media One

Una Healy, Erica Cody, Shane Casey, Demi Isaac Oviawae, Norma Sheehan, Rachel Pilkington (below, in Fair City) and Hilary Rose will be among the well-known faces on the sofa for Virgin Media Television's 'celebrity’ episode of Gogglebox Ireland.

As VMTV marks 25 years of public service free-to-air broadcasting (remember TV3?), a host of household names will join the smash hit show for a one-off special.

Instead of Joe and Josephine Soap, this special sees celebs from various strands of Irish life take to the remote control and react to the very best of television as it happens.

Chris Packham: Is It Time to Break the Law? 9.00pm, Channel 4

Naturalist Chris Packham (below) considers whether it is ethically acceptable to break the law to protest against British government policies on climate change.

He speaks with activists who believe mass civil disobedience is necessary for change to happen as well as meeting with radical environmentalist Andreas Malm who believes that more extreme, violent action is now necessary.

Sex Rated, 10.00pm, E4

Rylan (below) presents this brand-new dating show which sees people reunited with their exes for the biggest relationship debrief of their lives.

The opening episode meets musician Alexandros, whose hook-ups are on an international scale, and Gideon, a part-time witch whose sex life is going through a dry spell.

Expect a few hair-raising stories from that lot!

New to Stream

The Super Models, Apple TV+

This four-part series spotlights the remarkable careers of an iconic quartet: Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington.

Unprecedented access to the models takes viewers behind the camera and beyond the catwalk, revealing how they dominated the elite modeling world while illuminating a bond that single-handedly shifted the power dynamic of an entire industry.

The series travels back to the 1980s, when four women from different corners of the world united in New York.

Already forces in their own right, the gravitas they achieved by coming together transcended the industry itself.

Today, the four supermodels remain on the frontlines of culture through activism, philanthropy and business prowess.

Mr Mercedes, Disney+

Here’s all three seasons of the quirky and engaging drama - shown previously on RTÉ2 - based on the Stephen King Bill Hodges trilogy of novels, starring Brendan Gleeson as the titular retired detective.

Hodges is haunted by the unsolved case of ‘Mr. Mercedes’, who claimed 16 lives when he drove a stolen Mercedes through a queue of jobseekers at a local job fair.

Meanwhile, brilliant young psychopath Brady Hartsfield (Harry Treadway) emerges to focus his attention on Hodges.

What begins as an online cat-and-mouse game soon has deadly real-life consequences as an increasingly desperate Hartsfield becomes bent on leaving his mark on the world.

Sport

Live UEFA Champions League, 7.00pm, Virgin Media Two

It’s Germany v England as Bayern Munich host Manchester United (KO 8.00pm) in both teams' opening Group A game, held at Allianz Arena.

United famously defeated Bayern in the 1999 final, but have just one win from the eight subsequent meetings between the sides.

The Bavarians strengthened this summer with the signing of England captain Harry Kane (above), who scored three goals in this first three league games for the club, while the Mancunians have struggled for form in the early stages of the season.
