Strictly's back!

Strictly Come Dancing is back – with added Angela Scanlon, 27: Gone Too Soon looks at the rock and pop stars who've died at that tragically young age, and Alan Carr hosts new game show Picture Slam . . .

Pick of the Day

Strictly Come Dancing, 6.35pm, BBC One

Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman welcome 15 celebrities to the Strictly ballroom, alongside judges Shirley Ballas, Anton Du Beke, Craig Revel Horwood and Motsi Mabuse.

For Irish viewers, the main focus will be on our own Angela Scanlon (below). She’s always been game, so expect her to get a good run on this much-loved show.

The launch show features three epic routines, including a group number with the new cast and a performance featuring all four of the judges.

Current champions Hamza Yassin and Jowita Przystal make a triumphant return, and Jessie Ware performs one of her biggest hits in the ballroom.

Don’t Miss

27: Gone Too Soon, 9.00pm, Sky Arts

Streaming on NOW

Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison all died at the age of 27 between 1969 and 1971.

At the time, the coincidence gave rise to some comment, but it was not until the death of Kurt Cobain, about two and a half decades later, that the idea of a '27 Club’ began to catch on.

The concept was reignited once again with the sudden death of Amy Winehouse (above) in 2011.

Through interviews with people who knew them, such as music stars, critics, medical experts and unseen footage, the lives, music, and artistry of those who died at 27 are investigated with a bid to find answers.

Alicia Keys at the BBC, 8.20pm, BBC Two

A night of music opens with a selection of the Grammy-winning American singer-songwriter's performances on BBC music programmes, featuring the hits Fallin', No One, Girl on Fire and Empire State of Mind.

Followed by Rihanna at Radio 1's Hackney Weekend 2012 (9.20pm) and Britney at the BBC (10.15pm).

New or Returning Shows

Alan Carr's Picture Slam, 5.50pm, BBC One

Alan Carr continues his move into the centre of the showbiz mainstream with this Saturday evening slot.

He hosts this brand-new game show in which three teams of contestants have to identify a board full of images, with a chance of winning up to £10,000 if they know them all.

Taking part this week are friends Lou and Jude from Grimsby, cousins Sibtain and Umar from London and Nottingham, and friends Steph and Jo from Barry.

New to Stream

All My Puny Sorrows, Sky Cinema & NOW

Alison Pill, Sarah Gadon, Amybeth McNulty, Donal Logue and Mare Winningham star in director Michael McGowan’s drama.

Based on Miriam Toews' best-selling novel of the same name, it adds some wry humour to a pretty heart-wrenching story of two loving sisters.

One is a gifted pianist (Sarah Gadon) obsessed with ending her life, the other a struggling writer (Alison Pill) who, in wrestling with this decision, makes profound discoveries about herself.

Saturday Cinema

The Band Wagon, 2.40pm, BBC Two

Marvelous musical comedy, starring Fred Astaire (below), Jack Buchanan and Cyd Charisse (below). One of the greats.

Astaire plays a has-been Hollywood dancer and a pretentious producer form an uneasy alliance to stage a song-and-dance spectacular.

But the latter's bizarre ideas soon spiral out of control, while the former loathes the ballerina cast opposite him.

Really, the story plays a supportive role to some wonderful songs (and scenes) that include That's Entertainment and Dancing in the Dark. The former is iconic fun, while the latter is a thing of great beauty as Fred and Cyd knock it out of Central Park.

It’s preceded at 1pm by Funny Face, also starring Fred Astaire, alongside Audrey Hepburn. Well worth a look too.

The Greatest Showman, 6.35pm,

Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson and Zendaya star in the gloriously exuberant 2017 musical that redefined the genre and brought it into the 21st Century.

After losing his job as a shipping clerk, PT Barnum creates and develops his circus in New York in the mid-1800s with the help of playwright Phillip Carlyle and an adopted family of entertainers shunned by society.

Here's my review from when the film was first released.

Reservoir Dogs, 9.30pm, TG4

Quentin Tarantino's lean and iconic debut, starring Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Chris Penn and Steve Buscemi is always worth a watch.

A disparate bunch of criminals are employed by a crime boss to carry out a diamond robbery that goes disastrously wrong.

In the bloody aftermath, they try to establish what happened and how the police were aware of their plans all along - leading to the hardening suspicion that one of them betrayed the gang.

The Hurt Locker, 11.45pm, BBC One

Kathryn Bigelow's Oscar-winning drama, starring Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, Guy Pearce and Ralph Fiennes.

Two American bomb disposal experts operating in Iraq are assigned a new leader after their previous one dies in action.

Tricky as things are for them, the sergeant's reckless attitude and love of battle consistently puts them at risk.

Rugby World Cup

Finally, Ireland play their second group game, against Tonga (KO 8.00pm) in a Pool B encounter at Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes.

The sides have only met twice before, with Ireland winning both times, but the most recent was 20 years ago, so the Tongans will be looking to show how much they have improved.

Best of luck with that lads!

Jacqui Hurley presents, with analysis from Simon Zebo and Stephen Ferris.

Live Rugby World Cup 2023, 1.30pm, Virgin Media One

All the action from the Pool D encounter between Samoa and Chile (KO 2.00pm) at Stade de Bordeaux.

Chile are World Cup debutants after recording impressive qualifying wins against Canada and USA, but face a tough test against Samoa, who have been tournament mainstays since 1991.

That’s followed by Wales v Portugal (KO 4.45pm) in a Pool C encounter at Stade de Nice.

Despite struggles for form and off-the-pitch turmoil in recent times, Wales will be expecting a victory today ahead of what looks to be a tougher test next week against Australia.
