Mrs Brown is back!
Mrs Brown is back!

Mrs Brown's Boys is back for a new run, the Rugby World Cup begins in France, Gogglebox is back again, The Changeling lands on Apple TV+ and Celebrity MasterChef concludes . . .

Pick of the Day

Mrs Brown’s Boys, 9.30pm, BBC One

Return of the much-loved comedy, starring Brendan O'Carroll, about a foul-mouthed Finglas housewife, her family and friends.

As season four kicks off with an episode called Miserable Mammy, Agnes is feeling down in the dumps, and granddad’s bowel movements aren’t helping matters.

The place is a mess, she can’t seem to get any sleep, and to make things worse, Maria’s home remedies end in disaster.

Will the family show some much needed and long overdue appreciation for poor Agnes?

Don’t Miss

Relic, 11.25pm, BBC One

If you don’t fancy sleeping tonight this Australian spook-fest should be right up your street.

It’s a mystery horror, starring Emily Mortimer, Robyn Nevin and Bella Heathcote, which uses dementia as a prop in a haunted house-type thriller.

When a grandmother goes missing, three generations of the same family are haunted by a presence which comes from their collective past.

Philomena, 9.35pm, RTÉ One

The final pre-Late Late Show Friday on RTÉ One bows out with a cracking, fact-based drama, starring Judi Dench and Steve Coogan (below).

A teenager in 1950s Ireland becomes pregnant and gets sent to a home for 'fallen women’, while her baby is forcibly taken from her and sent to America to be adopted.

Fifty years later, she meets a disillusioned political journalist who attempts to reunite her with her son.

Adele at the BBC, 9.45pm, BBC Four

Another chance to see this one-off special, where the singer-songwriter is joined by her band to perform classic tracks, as well as songs from her then new album 25.

In between numbers, Adele talks to Graham Norton about her career and life and she also gets up close and personal with some of her biggest fans.

The show includes the first TV performance of Skyfall since the 85th Academy Awards in February 2013, where Adele won the Oscar for Best Original Song for the theme tune to the 23rd James Bond film.

It’s pretty sycophantic and sucky-uppy, which is the nature of these things. But Adele fans - and they are legion - will lap it up.

Followed by Michael Buble: Radio 2 in Concert (10.50pm) and Damien Rice: BBC Four Sessions (11.35pm).

New or Returning Shows

Rugby World Cup, 6.45pm, RTÉ2

Streaming on RTÉ Player

The hype is over, now it’s down to hosts France and New Zealand (KO 8.15pm) to begin the Rugby World Cup.

Jacqui Hurley presents all the action from the opening match of the tournament, as the Pool A rivals meet at Stade de France in Paris.

France's Jonathan Danty will miss the World Cup opener

The hosts reached the quarter-finals four years ago in Japan and will be expecting a strong showing this time around in front of their own fans. A good start would set them up.

But they begin their tournament with arguably the toughest possible fixture, as the All Blacks go into the tournament as favourites to lift the trophy this time after losing out to England in the semi-finals in 2019.

The coverage comes with analysis from Donal Lenihan, Jamie Heaslip, Jerry Flannery and Stephen Ferris.

Gogglebox, 9.00pm, Channel 4

It’s hard to believe, but this is the 22nd season of the show about watching people watching telly. Everyone must know the drill by now.

The armchair critics share their opinions on what they have been watching during the week, with cameras capturing their instant reactions and the lively discussions that are prompted by the week's biggest and best shows.

New to Stream

The Changeling, Apple TV+

Based on the acclaimed best-selling book of the same name by Victor LaValle and written and adapted by showrunner and executive producer Kelly Marcel, The Changeling is a fairytale for grown-ups.

It’s a horror story, a parenthood fable, and a perilous odyssey through a New York City you didn’t know existed.

In addition to LaKeith Stanfield, the series stars Clark Backo, Adina Porter, Samuel T Herring, Alexis Louder, Jared Abrahamson, and special guest star Malcolm Barrett.

This eight-parter opens with the first three episodes dropping today, followed by one episode weekly, every Friday up to Friday October 13.

Scream VI, Sky Cinema & NOW

Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Courteney Cox, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding and Hayden Panettiere star in this latest in the slasher franchise.

The four survivors from the most recent Woodsboro Ghostface killings have moved to New York City for a fresh start.

Just as they begin to feel a sense of normalcy, they receive that infamous call. Ghostface is more brutal and relentless than ever and will stop at nothing to hunt them down.

Spy Ops, Netflix

This could be a fascinating documentary.

Intelligence operatives from MI6 to the CIA – two of the planet’s most shady organisations - share insider stories of spy craft, Cold War campaigns, and coups carried out by covert agents.

Ending Today

Celebrity MasterChef, 8.00pm, BBC One

Twenty famous faces started the battle to become Celebrity MasterChef Champion 2023 and now only three remain.

The finalists must now cook and present a faultless three-course meal in two hours for judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace (above).

It’s their last chance to prove they have what it takes by showing true passion and creativity with their dishes before one of them is declared the winner.
