Holly Willoughby returned to ITV's This Morning today, after a eight-week long summer break.

The new season of the long-running morning show kicked off this morning, with Willoughby joined by co-presenter Alison Hammond.

The pair opened the programme from outside ITV studios alongside the cast of Mamma Mia! The Party, who performed hits including Dancing Queen, SOS and title track Mamma Mia.

TV star Willoughby said: "It is such a good way to start the show.

"Now, we are back from our summer break but it's not just the start of the new season for our show, for many people out there today is the first day of school."

Prior to the show, Hammond posted a video clip on Instagram of herself and Willoughby as they described their excitement to be reunited on the show

Willoughy took to Instagram also, posting a photo of her outfit, a regular occurrence on her social media.

Guests on today's show included comedian Joel Dommett, who hosts the National Television Awards in the UK on Tuesday evening, where This Morning will attempt to defend its title of best daytime show.

This Morning and The Great British Bake-Off star Hammond is nominated for the best TV presenter prize. Willoughby was longlisted but not nominated.

The show is rebuilding itself in the wake of the Phillip Schofield scandal in May that left the programme in turmoil.

After presenting the show for 21 years, Schofield resigned from This Morning before admitting he had had a relationship with a much younger man who worked with him on the show.

Dermot O'Leary will also continue to present the show

In a statement to The Daily Mail, the veteran TV presenter admitted that he and the man began a relationship that was "unwise but not illegal" and confessed that he had lied about the affair to ITV, his colleagues, his friends and his agents.

The story led to further allegations of a toxic culture behind the scenes of the show.
